It says much about their relationship that he understands that at this point that kind of reassurance -- a promise to be a second conscience and to make sure she doesn't really cross the line -- is exactly the thing she needs, rather than futile little expressions of concern or attempts to herd her back into the mannerisms of her old life (as though by returning to the appearance she'll regain the reality and undo the last twenty years).
