Superheroes and stuffs

I got home late from Watchmen.  The downstairs neighbours have been playing '90s alt-rock all night.  I had to get up at five, for an early shift at work.

Anyway, yes, Watchmen.  I liked it, lots.  I'm not a purist regarding any film adaptation, except possibly ... no, I can't think of anything.  I thought the cast and effects were great, I had no sense of time passing, and I just loved it.  However.  There was no giant squiddy thing at the end, and that totally negates any good aspects that preceded the finale.  Because without squid, what is the point?

Also, I kept getting distracted by the Nixon imitator, whose prosthetics weren't all that great on the Imax screen, and who sounded more like the Nixon head in a jar from Futurama.  And -- don't laugh -- but it seemed unfair to deliberately play up the, um, existence of George W. Bush, when the unintended parallels were equally obvious and chilling in the comic.  (Seriously, I read Watchmen right after 9-11, when it was blatantly obvious that attacking New York wouldn't cause world peace.  I'm all for cheap shots at GWB, but not when it throws the audience out of the story.)

I had more to say, but I have to go to work.  Bah.

Dude, that's nuts. This is the most faithful adaption I have EVER seen of a comic book, squid or no squid.

I have to second this. I mean, they even left Bubastis in. The giant purple cat.

He lists his objections here, if you'd curious. As of last night, he was back to grumpily waffling about whether he'd go or not, so there's still a chance I can drag him along with me. If not ... too bad for him.
