I've well and truly returned to my anime era. I spent much of the last week watching Pluto, which is absolutely magnificent, and so tailored to what I like that I don't know why it took me so long to get around to watching it. It's so so good.

I knew it was like an adult version of an Astro Boy storyline, but tbh I don't remember that storyline well, so it felt very fresh. Gesicht's story felt like 90% something le Carre would have written, had he lived in a world with humanoid robots, sad and bitter and complicated and intertwined with the grim sides of international politics. The way the story used the robots to tell a story about war trauma, child loss, the dark mess of politics, optimism in the face of climate apocalypse, etc. felt truly mature. In a way this reminded me of the feeling I get from Ghost in the Shell, though they are ultimately very different SF stories. What does it mean to be human or inhuman? What do you do with the sadness you feel about lost chances?

The ending is profoundly emotional, thoroughly overwhelming. I cried, honestly.

The third episode of The Summer Hikaru Died also dropped today, and it continues to be prickly and uncomfortable in the most fascinating way, capturing that mix of compelling and disgusting that is adolescent desire.

Not much accomplished bar a socks and underwear wash at the laundromat. Never go on a Saturday, yes, but there's always washers available and I don’t use dryers for my smalls. Also I got in before the two guys and the family came in with something like five bags of laundry apiece, containing quilts and blankets and what-all. These must be regulars because two of the men greeted each other in the jovial way of long acquaintances. Guy 1 introduced guy 2 to family guy 3, 'this is my older brother', then introduced guy 3 to his brother 'and this is the owner.' Did wonder why guy 3 gave me a nod as he came in, because faceblind me didn't recognize him from my one, I think, previous brief encounter. Am bemused that the owner of a laundromat would do his family wash there, especially as four of the dryers are still out of order, but I suppose it's an outing for the wife and kid.

Have been fighting a desire for Vietnamese coffee with coffee jelly, as provided by a Banh Mi place two subway stops west of here. Viet coffee has condensed milk and I don't need the calories, and the coffee jelly is sweetened and I don't need the sugar. Thought about ordering in, but you can't order just  two coffees and I have no change for tipping. Thought about walking there, which would burn calories, but that stretch of Bloor was having the Koreatown festival, which I know from last year makes Bloor impassable.  Elbows are unhappy today and taking the rollator there felt like too much.  Thought of using the upright walker instead, but it's a wide beast that takes up 3/4 of the sidewalk and is not what one wants on a summer Saturday when everyone is out and about, even on the sidestreets. Especially the dog walkers, of which there are many many in the last five years, often with two or three dogs apiece. So I stayed in with the fans on and vegged.

We are essentially done at Mom’s flat. I didn’t have a lot to do today, but am still tired. We will decide tomorrow what if anything we want to do.

Leaving for Boston Monday afternoon.

We had Chinese food delivered tonight, and it was basic good Cantonese food. They included a small bag of those weird shrimp chips, which I turned out to be in the mood for.

Today is cloudy, mild, and wet. It rained all morning.

I fed the birds. I've seen motion but the windows were too wet to identify anything.

EDIT 7/19/25 -- Yay, the window dried up enough to see through!  Sparrows, house finches, and a mourning dove are mobbing the feeders.

EDIT 7/19/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 7/19/25 -- I potted up 2 cherry plums and a white peach.

EDIT 7/19/25 -- I added more potting soil to several pots that needed it.

Fireflies are coming out.  Cicadas are singing.

I am done for the night.

Welp, at last I have fallen into the DMBJ hole. As usual, the h/c got me, then the actors, then the podfics.

One podficcer in particular has incredible pieces and I was finally able to draw fanart for her fic & podfic, Tongues (Wu Xie/Hei Xiazi, 2k, rated Explicit). It's a gorgeous story stet right before Sand Sea, as Wu Xie gets lost in snake venom, his mind spiraling and loosing its grip on his sense of self, which is shown as his language-switching unconsciously. Hei Xiazi rouses him back out of it via sex and connecting with him. It is a stellar written and audio work.

My piece is:

The plants that the landscaper placed too close to a fence and that I was too ignorant to gainsay have been deformed variously for neighborly relations, now that those plants are tall enough to peek over. Leaving the resulting twigs where foot traffic would otherwise result in winter mud has been effective, so far. Tiny housemate considers it her duty to pull them apart somewhat, to the extent that she complains if I don't toss the cut branches her way. She's learned not to linger over the ones whose bark oils are dog-unfriendly, and whenever I use my thumbnails to strip drying bark, she complains again: just toss the stick!

The persimmon tree grew so much in response to the unusually wet spring that several branches became long and heavy by midsummer, apt to break---more lopping.

Most plants my height or shorter have been drifting towards sere yellow-brown, except the peony, which almost chose dormancy this year and has put up a hand-height of leaves. Self-seeded dill shoots have appeared again, thanks to the ants. Self-seeded California poppy has dried out for the season. Half the hydrangeas are the smallest they've been so far, between drowning in oxalis over winter and being too shaded by other plants since spring; the other half look much as they did last year. A neighbor's semi-myrtle, which smells similar to eucalyptus whenever I trim the overhang from my side of our fence, has sent up shoots more than a meter into my yard, including beneath one hydrangea. The latter may not last, since I try not to water that corner as a result.

The wisteria stub nudged a handful of green vines upwards, which tiny housemate tried showing me, then eating. (The eating was thwarted.) Last year, with a drier preceding winter, the wisteria stub was quiet. My struggles to find and discard wisteria seed pods before tiny housemate could poison herself were the prior fall, when she was a puppy. I suspect she was only showing me a new thing in the yard, not remembering the seed pods, but even hey-look is pretty cool from a dog when it's not something the dog has caused.
