Cranky Liz spam!

I got home from work, and somehow it was like INSTA!BAD MOOD! Usually it's the other way around. But I sat down, and suddenly today's stomach cramps turned into hiccups, and then there was the casting call for the new Torchwood characters, and that was like RTD had sat down to create the maximum amount of fail possible. So no good mood for Liz! Maybe I'll feel better after I've had a shower and a glass of wine*.

In the meantime, let's all admire RTD's casting call. The new characters on Torchwood are:

- asshole white guy
- woman of colour who unrequitedly loves asshole white guy
- Roman Polanski

Things which don't seem to upset belly: lighter red wines, smoked salmon and marscapone pizza, strawberry and lime cider, frozen spaghetti bolognese, Arnotts Country Cheese crackers, raspberry and orange juice. Things which do upset belly: EVERYTHING ELSE.

Huuuuh. Well. It--could be well-handled. ...I hope. Perhaps our pedophile is not a TEAM MEMBER, as that part of the message is truncated on the casting call? Surely he wouldn't be, just due to: how could the CIA afford to associate with a minor media celebrity? Talk about blown covers.

So it might be alrightish. Except I already hate Rex. And what a name. Lord, it's Bridehead Revisited Revisited. Ahaha, I love that joke. Go me.

...just prepping you for the arrogance that is: REX!!

Someone copied these to me last night. Here's how Roman Polanski Oswald's ends: "But this man is destined to become more important than even he could have foreseen, as terrifying events of worldwide significance begin to turn around him... "

Don't know if he's a series regular, but that's still made of significant fail.

Criswell predicts that events of "significance" turning around Oswald + Esther's highlighted devout Christianity = pedo!Christ incoming on runway seven. I'll be over in the corner here, laughing some more.

I have my issues with Christianity, but. That's just ABSURD. They can't do that. They CAN'T.

Despite the aforementioned laughter I'm totally serious in this prediction, based on RTD's fascination with Christian themes and messiah-figures and his take on the concept of "forgiveness" as played out in previous stuff. Also he seems like the sort of fella who would enjoy poking at what he imagines the "mainstream" religious sensibilities in his new resident country to be with a giant stick, wheeee I'm so edgy.

The awful thing is, you might be right. I can definitely see where his various tendencies would come into play here and lead to something truly horrific. Messiah-figures, he does have a Thing for them. Jack, Ten, Owen the King of the Weevils fighting Death.

Yeah, I knew I wasn't going to be watching this season (not after the utter FAIL of Children of Earth), but now I'm REALLY not watching it. *sigh*

"Messiah-figures, he does have a Thing for them. Jack, Ten, Owen the King of the Weevils fighting Death."

And Ten's divine-intervention-style "I forgive you" to the Master and (in offscreen interviews) all that stuff about how we should pity the Master because he's mentally ill, not hate him as evil. If that sort of reasoning comes into play for the pedo it should be...interesting.

"I knew I wasn't going to be watching this season (not after the utter FAIL of Children of Earth), but now I'm REALLY not watching it."

I drifted away from Torchwood after S1 and so anything I know about it now comes from my flist, which, seems frankly like a better setup than actually watching it.

Yeah, that. Ugh, the Tinkerbell!Jesus!Doctor was really, really distasteful for me.

... he WOULDN'T. owww, my head, it hurts. D:

I haven't watched Torchwood regularly at all - S2 I liked better than S1, though. More Ianto, Owen became much less of an asshole and even a sympathetic figure, though I was never quite able to fully like him because HI, RAPIST. Tosh was lovely in it, too. It made me sad for the ladies, though - they didn't get enough awesome, though they did manage to get some good moments in.

Katusi is a real name - it's an older-style romanisation of "Katsushi", a Japanese surname. Lots of Japanese-Americans use pre-WWII romanisations because that's when their families arrived in the US.

That said, "all races and ethnicities EXCEPT Caucasian" tends to indicate "I saw this name somewhere and it sounded EXOTIC".

Uhhhh RTD seriously thinks that making a child molester a featured character is gonna fly? As much as I like Torchwood--which is admittedly not very much--I hope this bombs ASAP.

There's nothing specifically saying that Esther can't wear a miniskirt, except for the fact that Rusty probably thinks that all people who are religious live like Amish or unreconstructed Mormons.

[personal profile] fyrdrakken 2010-07-14 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's just that the three most common surnames in Wales are Jones, Davis, and Thomas. I can see why Rusty Davies isn't going to name a character Davis, but I wonder why he doesn't use Thomas occasionally.

The man's outdone himself, I must say. That's disgusting in all kinds of different ways!

If it's real, and it seems like it is. Ugh.

(I was actually hopeful for this season, too, because by and large I quite liked Children of Earth. Of course, I wanted an angsty dark comedy Alice/Agent Johnson buddy cop type show and that was never going to happen.)

So... he's essentially recreated Tosh, turned Owen into the predator most people considered him as being (and turned him into a celebrity for it), and cloned Jack without the immortality.

Tell me again how original a writer this guy is?

It's really a good thing this is for Torchwood, a show I never much cared about. I'd be really upset if Rusty was revamping a show I liked -- especially for Starz, who'll let him go really over the top on the sex and violence and "edginess."

I find it interesting that the non-white minority female character is also going to be a "devout Christian." A devout Christian in "unrequited" love with someone who seems to be a thoroughgoing bastard. Has Rusty ever met any devout Christian women? He certainly doesn't seem to have met any Americans.
