iMai

Posting from work to say that for nearly a week I've been the proud owner of an iPad (secondhand, black, still with AppleCare and prepaid internet to December, plus cases and a stylus), and I have no regrets whatsoever. As far as slow-burn impulse purchases go, this one's a winner.

I just need to find a cover that is red or black or grey, and iMai will really feel like it's mine.

I guess the only important question now is--does it shoot blades, darts, or both?

I love your iPad posts no matter how trivial! I feel like we were two women who had babies on the same day (well ok, not really) and I want to enjoy your iPad affection vicariously while I am so happy about my own.

I usually write in Scrivener and hand code the html, if any, so I'm using PlainText app. @hope showed me how to sync my Scrivener files with dropbox and PlainText syncs them back. Works pretty well. I haven't used it enough to love it or hate it. I haven't tried to write for a long period using the screen keyboard yet.

If iOS Pages is anything like the Mac version, it's great. I much prefer it to Word.

I love Pages on my iPad, but I'm a MacOS native so it's also what I use at work. I'm not much of a fan of typing on the iPad (I find it's okay for taking notes, but not for writing whole fics), so I ended up buying a bluetooth keyboard to use when I'm writing for extended periods of time. It's definitely replaced my need for a laptop. Pages syncs with iCloud and GMail (which is how I use it), so I can get to my documents most everywhere.

I have a gray Smart Cover on my iPad, and I like it a lot -- it doesn't show dirt very much, unlike my previous pink Smart Cover. The only drawback is that you get vertical dust lines on the screen from the folding areas, but those are easily wiped off.

The only keyboard I have for my iPad (standard disclaimer: I won it and so got it for free, I can't justify buying a new one at full price) is an iHome portable case+keyboard set. The key board is small, and not really conducive to lots of typing. Also, it seems to disable the auto-spellcheck in the web-browser. I don't know why.

So, I tell you that so that you understand how it informed my choice of word processor. I don't do an excessive amount of typing, and when I do, it's because I got a story idea I have to jot down right away, possibly while in bed. Werdsmith is a free App that lets you store up to ten documents at a time, has real-time spellcheck even when I use the keyboard, and lets you email the contents any of the documents with a couple of clicks. This is helpful to me because I can then send my ideas and full short stories to my own email address, and then copy and paste the contents into my proper archive on my laptop at a later more convenient time.

I'm willing to shell out for a real word processor, but I don't have any trusted sources offering reviews or advice. If you do experiment with any, I'd appreciate your making posts about them.
