Doctor Who: The Day of the Moon
Well, that was ... well, that was an episode of a TV show, about which I have some opinions. I think.
That was ... that was ... look, I'm really glad that Moff has decided to try and top "Ghost Light" for most confuzling DW story ever, but I understood "Ghost Light" on a first viewing, and here I feel like I maybe need to watch it again to get everything sorted in my mind. And even then, I think a lot of it isn't going to become clear until the end of the season.
These aren't bad things! I like stories that unfold slowly, and which reward re-watching. But I know we're now going to embark on months of "Moff can't write plot" and "I didn't understand this story, even the bits that were comprehensible to eight year olds, because it wasn't spoon-fed to me!" and that's just boring. I resolved last week not to read ep reactions that I know will annoy me, because life is too short to spoil your own fun like that.
ANYWAY, THAT WAS A BIT AMAZING, WASN'T IT? And by "amazing" I mean "HELLA CREEPY"! It's not that the Silents are all that scary in appearance (except when they're ... nesting on the ceiling, and look like nothing so much as a whole mass of skulls), but the story itself was classic "look behind you" stuff. A creepy deserted children's home! The marks on the faces! (Only, why would you keep a tally on your face? You'd only see it when you looked in a mirror.)
I expected, from the trailer, that we'd be opening the story a few months later, but we don't really get an explanation for how or why the Doctor is captured (or let's himself get captured, possibly to secure Canton's place as his mole within the FBI) or what happens in the meantime, except that the team split up and are running. It's pretty self-explanatory, though, and if we don't get missing three months fic, I'll be very disappointed in fandom.
(Eleventy/Canton! YOU CAN'T TELL ME THEY WEREN'T WEIRDLY COMFORTABLE WITH THE BOW TIE STRAIGHTENING!)
(Speaking of Canton, I totally called that he was gay last week, and then watched in puzzlement as fandom tied itself up in knots to explain that the Moff is far too homophobic to ever write about gay people.)
calapine has proper meta-type thoughts on the Doctor's method of removing the Silence, which sum up what I was thinking, so we can move on.
LOTS OF THOUGHTS. ALL THE CAPSLOCK! Here, let's break this down into a handy list:
- My dream of seeing Rory in a different period costume every week is now being catered to!
- However, it could well be supplanted by a dream of seeing Rory in 1969 clothes every week!
- There's a moment where we see ... Amy's dream? Or Amy walks into the little girl's dream? Either way, it's as yet unexplained.
- RIVER AND THE DOCTOR AND HIS NOT-REMOTELY-SECRET LOVE FOR HER MAD SKILLZ! You know, sometimes I watch scenes and I'm like, THAT WILL LOOK AMAZING IN A VID! This was one of those moments.
- Relatedly, I'm glad the show has moved on from the Ten's Hatred For Guns Is Pastede On Yay period, which was really quite tedious. River's little, "My old fellow didn't see that" moment covered it quite nicely, thank you.
Okay, enough list! Here, have a crack theory:
The Silents have a very TARDIS-like design to their ships. And they seemed, for reasons as yet unknown, to be very concerned with protecting a child that turned out to be a Time Lord. My theory: they were created by the Time Lords as weapons in the Time War, but went rogue -- or simply gained their independence following the destruction of Gallifrey -- and started pursuing their own agenda.
Is Amy pregnant? Yes and no. So that's curious. Is the child her daughter? Who knows? Is it next week yet? No! Why? OPPRESSION.

Oh my god, I -- I love this more than life. Would you mind if I adopted it as my wee headcanon and nurtured it and perhaps used it in fic? I have no idea if I would use it, but I love it enough that it's probable, so I thought I would check to see if you mind my using it.

(Uh, and also! Am very intrigued by Schrodinger's pregnancy, and its potential for timebabies.)

I think it was all a transparent excuse to get Eleven into the Robinson Crusoe beard.

THIS. I did this all last season - I read yours and a few you linked to, whose verdict I could trust to be Not Idiotic*. I am going to do that again - except I have a few friends and coworkers who have only started watching Who in these last few months, and I KNOW thet are going to have negative comments (re: minor plot holes, Amy's Schrödinger's pregnancy) and then I will have to talk in a yelly voice. Sigh.
*Of course, AFTER it was over I read all of that and spent some time in full on nerd rage 24/7.

So much seconded!
Your thoughts line up quite nicely with my thoughts and re the silence - I keep remembering (like, all the time) I think it was Ten talking about why he did the Timelock and the awful weapons they were releasing - The Nightmare Child and other things. And then I go ohhhhhhhhh what if, what if!!! and flail in wonderment

YES.

This. Also, fic of Jenny and Astronaut Girl teaming up and having madcap adventures through time and space plz?
I'm glad the show has moved on from the Ten's Hatred For Guns Is Pastede On Yay period
Oh lord yes.
Good theory. If they were Time War weapons, that would explain why the Doctor's never noticed their retroactive presence throughout Earth's history in all his many centuries of meddling.

One theory of a friend: Silents are trying to breed a Time Lord.
Another theory, of
My theory (not incompatible): we have multiple (at least 2) time lines, maybe including a surplus Doctor. Maybe Silence broke something.
