Still having Korra squee

It excites me that I keep seeing people saying that all the buzz about Korra makes them think of watching Avatar: the Last Airbender. Because that's how I got into it, back when the sequel was first announced!

It excites me less that people are saying they're totally going to watch Korra, but not Avatar, because that's a kid's show. People who dismiss all stories written for children are every bit as annoying as people who say YA is the only good literary genre. (Yeah, I saw something along those lines recently. Where I would say that YA is a sales category, not a genre, and certainly YA sci-fi is where a lot of the really interesting writing and character-driven speculative fiction is happening, and dismissing the majority of literature just makes you look like a bit of a jackass.)

(I think I'm also having leftover rage from last year, when people were saying there were too many children in Doctor Who, and they're not proper people, and it's not like any children watch the series OH WAIT.)

Hold on, is "Korra" meant to be an adult spin-off, then?

ARGH. My current peeve is people who won't consume anything that doesn't have sex in it. Because apparently that's the only thing worth writing about.

But I also object to YA-as-a-genre (marketing category is a good term; I'm going to start using that), and both dismissing it and holding it up as the only thing worth reading and...

In conclusion, KORRA! And I need to rewatch ATLA.

.....

Do these people literally never consume any media except porn and erotica? That seems to be cutting oneself off from the vast majority of all media ever.

I don't understand why people won't watch something just because it's supposed to be a kids show. That's just hurting yourself. Perhaps they'll watch Korra, be overcome by awesome, and go watch Avatar?

I am so glad I missed that Doctor Who comment. How do you not reply with just laughter?

Just like Manga is a format, not a genre. (nods)

They sound like the marketing department of DC comics.

I came into watching Avatar because of buzz too, though the bad kind. I saw everyone raging about the movie and wanted to know what the original actually was so I could have educated rage too. And then fell in love. lol

I don't understand the "bleh, children's story" attitude. I've seen people feel that way about HP, or dismiss the entire YA genre because it's for kids/teens. Which is just ridiculous to me. Good stories are good stories!

I started watching because of movie rage too! Before that, the show had only crossed my radar once: trying to play an Avatar game on the Wii with my nephew. I had no idea what was going on, but he wanted someone to join him, and I got to be Katara. I was hopelessly bad at virtual waterbending. :) In any case, I did make the connection to my brief gaming when the movie controversy started cropping up everywhere. That was what made it enter my consciousness enough to decide to check it out. And I'm so glad I did!

I actually found it through the journalfen wank comms when everyone was furious about the whitewashing, before it even came out how horrible the movie was in other ways, and was like "This is making me want to watch the original" and a bunch of people were like YES, DO IT. I'm so glad I did too!

I was actually surprised by how mature ATLA could be. Yeah, it has its moments of silly, but I also find that that is what makes it so charming and fun.

I had no idea that Korra was what got you into the show! Cool.
