Mirroring fic at Dreamwidth

I have not had much to say about the current AO3/OTW debacle, save that I used to think they needed to make some changes to address racist harassment on the archive, and now I think we need to throw the whole org out and start over. (At the very least, Legal needs to go.)

But I've felt for a while that, with the AO3's spaghetti code problem, at least, it was a mistake to put all our fic eggs in one basket. The archive was never meant to become the sole repository of fic for all fandoms, but that's what it accidentally became.

I got myself a NeoCities account and tried to create a website, but it's hard? I can't believe I used to do this all the time? Do you know how much fic I have on AO3 that I would need to copy over?

Dreamwidth, on the other hand, has everything going back to my LJ days, so there's just some Voyager fic missing. (I really should scour Trekiverse and the Wayback Machine, but that's a project for a future day.) So please bear with me as I post a few years of fic here over the next few weeks. Including, God help us you, chapter fic, which isn't exactly something I had to deal with much back in the day.

I'm dechaptering my chapter fic. One DW post can fit about 40k of fic, so only a couple of mine will need to be split up.

This scheme is due to my immense laziness.

Yeah, some phones just go back to the top of the page if you switch tabs or whatever. So anything longer than 5k is annoying.

I'm still too lazy to post 13 chapters instead of 1.

Yeah I've been thinking about archiving some of my stuff at dreamwidth. This got me thinking about the practicalities and I might actually do it now, at least for things like comics that aren't nicely archived at tumblr/ff.net.

Aww, this is wild! Chapter fics!

I should totally try to port over my minuscule amount of stuff but when I think about it, I feel boneless. Augh.

I've also thought about backing up what's not already on Dreamwidth, but it's a touch daunting, lol.

I guess my stubborn insistence on continuing to crosspost all my fic here works in my favor for once! Though I never did port over all the stuff that's on LJ once I put it up on AO3. Perhaps I should look into that.

I have ~360 fics on AO3 and thinking about copying it all to literally anywhere else makes me want to cry. Even downloading copies for myself in case I don't still have the original Word files somewhere (which I should for most things) seems super daunting.

You could try SquidgeWorld. They use the same code as AO3, and they have a method for importing fic from AO3. It's not super simple, but it's better than posting from scratch.

(I hope you don't mind me popping in like this. I ran across your post when I was searching Dreamwidth for posts about the OTW problems.)

I've also set up at neocities. I'm having the two wolf problem of 'do something, anything, even if it is broken' vs 'argh, must do it Properly The First Time'. I'm not a fic writer; I'm looking at moving book reviews there, because I loathe goodreads. I've successfully moved everything to StoryGraph, but I don't trust it to not go down the wrong route at some point.

I am, because that is the kind of person I am, contemplating whether some kind of scraping methodology would work for that. Because 'scrape into common format, apply css' seems like a way to go. I feel like a similar process should be doable for AO3.
