lizbee: A sketch of myself (Default)

So, I finished Babylon 5. Which is to say, I kept having to pause "Sleeping in Light" because I kept tearing up and crying like a little girl. At the end, I was so red and puffy that [personal profile] piecesofalice freaked out and asked if I was okay.

(I liked it. I feel like I was so thoroughly spoiled for it that I have nothing new to say, except it's sort of the perfect ending. Aside from the lack of Lochley, on account of how it was filmed before she was created and introduced.

By the final scenes, I was torn between Pathetic Shipper Angst and excitement at the possibiliy of fic where Delenn and Ivanova rule the universe. They're basically the new Romana and Leela in my head, although Delenn's a more capable politician and Ivanova's fully dressed most of the time. Sadly, very little such fic seems to exist. I may have to write it myself, right after I do something about counterbalancing the ridiculous amount of fic where straightforward gender-normative hurt/comfort scenarios are presented without comment or subversion. Oh yeah, I got my subverting hat on.

Also, it is probably wrong how much more I like Lennier after he tries to kill Sheridan. Just for the sheer lulz of it, I think. I bet his diary is hilarious.)

Then, because I am lame, I went back and watched "The Gathering". Which is not actually as bad as my parents made it out to be when they forbade us to watch it on the grounds that they might never get that two hours back, but they were damned if we kids had to suffer the same fate. But that's not to say it's that good. Tamlyn Tomita is just embarrassingly bad as Laurel Takashima, so I take back every cruel thought I've ever had about Claudia Christian's acting. Carolyn Sykes was basically Catherine Sakai only white and annoying. Doctor Kyle was the only proto-character whose departure I regret. As he's also the only character who is repeatedly mentioned throughout the series, I'm guessing I'm not the only one who felt that way. G'Kar's early make-up made him look ill; Delenn's masculine appearance was uncanny, as was Mira Furlan's performance. The whole character was weirdly aggressively, yet also flirting with Sinclair. I think androgynous!Delenn actually swaggers at one point. I'm glad they dropped the sex-change idea, because I can only see it leading to fail (and first season!Delenn is so lovely anyway), but it was interesting to watch. And Lyta appeared to be cosplaying as a Lee Sullivan illustration of Bernice Summerfield, which was nice.

Then I watched "In the Beginning", which tasted of delicious retcon. I do enjoy a good interstellar war, and there were lots of bits that I enjoyed, but also a lot that had me shaking my head and wondering how to reconcile that with ... you know, everything else. But it did have lots of Dukhat, so there was quite a lot of win to be had. We are talking about a guy who had two Vorlons stashed in his bedroom, after all. Also, the Centauri woman from the framing story had a very pretty French accent.

After all that, my DVDs arrived this morning: the whole series, plus Crusade, plus all the TV movies, including "The Lost Tales", which isn't normally included in the sets. Total cost: AU$160, which I thought was pretty good, as the individual seasons go for at least $50 each. I think I shall now watch the whole series again. YES, IT'S A BIT SAD BUT IT MAKES ME HAPPY.
