Doctor Who season 5 trailer
Feb. 24th, 2010 06:35 pmI totally meant to make a post about this on Sunday, back when it was current and exciting. But I was distracted by the sheer acid trip crackiness of it, not to mention I had to work. So. Here is a screencap recap, with bonus commentary! Please note that said commentary includes spoilers of just about every stripe, including some stuff that I might have just made up in my head but thought I read somewhere.
Eleven and Amy are lying on the grass, looking up at the stars.

Some of the stars are possibly CGI.
This bit is obviously an homage to the scene in "Silver Nemesis" where Seven and Ace lay on the grass and listened to jazz. Only not as good, obviously. But it clearly means that Amy will be a pyromaniacal Communist with mummy issues. Matt Smith sounds moderately posh, very camp, and slightly self-conscious in these bits. I hope the self-consciousness is just a passing thing. More importantly, Amy is SCOTTISH.

THEN THE GROUND OPENS UP BENEATH THEM AND THEY ARE SUCKED INTO A SWIRLING VORTEX OF ALIENS AND ENERGY AND CGI! Hey kids, don't do LSD! The Doctor and Amy cling to each other, and it is sweet.
Some people will tell you that Amy's clothes indicate that she is in her late teens, maybe even younger. This seems unlikely: as far as I can tell these days, teenagers prefer to dress either like hookers at a Duran Duran concert (...no judgement implied or intended), or like they just wandered off the set of 90210 c.1994 (lots of judgement implied and intended). Also, Amy has a fiance, and spoilers say the Doctor attends her wedding. (There's also a script fragment where he gives her and her fiance Rory a quick trip through time and space as a wedding present. I AM GLEEFUL.) She does look young to be getting married, but hey, so was my brother, so whatevs.
This trailer was designed to run in cinemas before Alice in Wonderland. It's in 3D, because that's what all the cool kids are doing this year.

3D LAUGHS AT YOUR PUNY FOURTH WALL!
In addition to swirling CGI vortex energy, the swirling vortex of CGI contains monsters. Which will presumably feature in the actual series, because otherwise this is just so much wank. We have a Dalek (apparently they are going to be fighting Nazis with Churchill, which is either brilliant or terrible, I can't decide. Presumably if it's terrible, Terry Nation will rise from his grave and eat Moff's brains.) On the right hand side, we see something which I believe is called a "Smiler". The meme reckons it's the Big Bad of the series. The mask is a bit eh, but the name gives me chills, which is funny, because the name "Weeping Angel" just makes me lol a bit.
Speaking of which!

Spotting a Lonely Assassin (*sporfle*), Eleven tells Amy to trust him, then pushes her away. THAT IS SUCH A THING OF MINE I LOVE IT. Also, note that he takes a moment to feel her up before she flies off. Tom Baker would be proud. I am hoping that the trust-push thing means that Eleven will be manipulating Amy so she can overcome her crippling emotional scars and become a time travelling world-saver in her own right. Because if it turns out we're going to have a whole season of "protect the companion, she is a weak and fragile female", I'm gonna be bored.
The Doctor engages in one on one combat with a Weeping Angel. A staring contest would take too long to portray here, so the Angel just explodes. It is epic.

Amidst the rubble of the Angel, the Doctor finds Amy again. I SWEAR I AM SUCH A SUCKER FOR THAT SORT OF THING. "All of time and space. Anywhere and everywhere. Where do you want to start?" Now Smith sounds like the Doctor.

Lolling about on the grass, recovering from their acid trip like goddamn hippies. All is right with the universe. UNTIL A SKELETAL MASK PUNCHES THROUGH THE GROUND ITSELF. I feel like I could make a joke about Smith's face here, but I won't. Spec says the SKELETAL MASK is a revamped Silurian? I can see it, but I hope it's not. WHERE'S MY THIRD EYE AT?
So yes, that is the trailer. It was ... cracksome. I liked the bits with Eleven and Amy, I thought the effects were ... well, I'm sure their mum thinks they're special. And I got some lulz out of it. And really, isn't that all that matters?
