I apologise for inflicting a picture of the Dark Lord on people without warning. As compensation, here is a recent photo of a being infinitely more evil, yet somehow more fun to be around:



That's what I wake up to most days. Although on the weekdays it's still dark when I wake up.

We are actually thinking of getting another cat, as Harvey's behavioural problems haven't really settled down since we moved, and the vet says it's because he's unsocialised, lonely and still traumatised by the deaths of his kitty-siblings. (If you don't know the story, he was found abandoned in a carpark near a river or creek. He was only about four weeks old, and there were no other cats or kittens in the area. Now, he carries around small stuffed animals and cries, and when we asked the vet, he said Harvey was probably remembering his futile attempts to save his siblings' lives. OUR CAT HAS POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER, GUYS.)

Anyway, sajee and dear_prudence recently got a lovely kitten from a local no-kill shelter, and that brought the issue into clearer focus for us. So we're thinking, unless Harvey makes some very sudden changes in the next few weeks, we're going to contact the woman who runs the shelter and see if she has a cat who would be appropriate as a housemate for Harvey. Possibly an older cat who has had kittens of her own. Certainly not a tiny kitten on whom he would be a bad influence.

Poor old Harvey. He swaggers around the house like he's a lion, but he spotted another cat outside the front window and didn't know if he should panic or attack. He settled for maintaining a hypervigilant presence at all the front doors and windows.

Aw, poor Harvey!

The thought of him trying to save his siblings is just heartbreaking.

I KNOW. I kind of laughed at first -- a cat! With PTSd! -- but it's really terrible. The sound he makes as he carries these stuffed toys around is absolutely heartrending.

Then, of course, he goes and sinks his teeth into my fleshy parts. And looks up at me as if to say, "What? You looked delicious!"

Also, poor Harvey :( I'm so glad I got my two boys together from the same litter. They sleep together and curl up and lick each other. And sometimes fight in a way that involves my feet very painfully at 5am. But I luff them.

Sadly, Tony Abbott is only slightly less of a prejudiced fundamentalist than Lord Voldemort. :P (She says, still trying to rationalise her decision to stick with the Liberals at this election.)

The idea of Harvey having PTSD about his lost sibling-cats is incredibly saddening. :(

Franklin spent a week crying and looking for his brothers when he first got him - typically, he only settled down after some nice burly men showed up to install our internet and he was all 'hai, come here often?' - and he was clingy as fuck until we got Orlando. We had to get him a brother/boyfriend because otherwise I would have had to drop out of my MA and love him full-time.

Oh that is horrifying. Both Abbott and Harvey's PTSD. :( Poor little ginger kitty. :( I think the older cat plan is a good one.

I had a mama cat that did that. She had two kittens, but only one survived, and she was just sure there should be more. She used to go around the house searching for them, and she had a strange tendency to try to pick me and my sister up, presumably so she could put us with the kitten.

That story about Harvey's PTSD is one of the saddest things I've ever heard. Getting him a friend to keep him company sounds like a really good idea.

Aw, poor kitty. I hate hearing stories about cats who've been abandoned. It makes me want to track down the people and shout at them until they realize what they did. Which is probably not that helpful, but still.

If it makes you feel any better, my kitty sometimes does a similar thing with his favorite toys, carrying them around the house and yowling, but he's never been through any trauma that we're aware of - he's just a big silly who likes to shout for someone to pay attention and play with him if he's bored. ...Unless he really is traumatized, which had never occurred to me before, and now I shall slightly be worried about. Oops.

Either way, a second kitty sounds like a lovely idea - if it's trauma, it'll be good for him to have a friend, and if it's just boredom, another kitty will quickly solve that, too.
