I think I need to not go to the pool before I watch LoK, because once again, I got home, watched it while eating my lunch, managed to have a blood sugar crash while eating my lunch, and then basically fell asleep for three hours.

I liked this, but I didn't love it. Which may not be a problem with the episode itself, see above. It's hard to appreciate things properly when you're attempting to inhale your own body weight in gluten-free cheese twists.

Mostly I like seeing Mako being competent and less douchey than usual. (I mean, I enjoy that his character this year is Right About Lots Of Things In The Douchiest Way Possible, but there's a time and a place.) By contrast, I also enjoyed seeing Asami making a huge mistake, because it's basically the first time since she trusted her father that she has put a foot wrong. I mean, I have a narrative kink for competence, but there's not much drama with a character who's right all the time.

Bolin continues to give me the shits, but then, he hasn't come across as competent since, oh, his first appearance. He's basically one of those guys who gives the impression of having it all together, but is actually a great big child in search of someone to look after him, and I'm like, nope.

Like, season 1, it pissed me off that the brothers are in need of income, Mako goes out and gets a fricking job, and Bolin is ... doing animal tricks. Sure, he's younger, but at Bolin's age, Zuko was fighting a war and putting himself in charge of a country. And Zuko is not exactly a character known for consistency when it comes to doing things well.

...of course, one of the reasons that I think people are less engaged by the teen characters in LoK is because they were raised in peacetime, and are surrounded by reasonable adults, and so the stakes are generally lower for them. BUT STILL, I mostly want to shake Bolin and tell him to grow up already.

Ironically, while Bolin was making me really cross, Eska pleased and amused me. In her one scene. More of her interacting with her family, less of her being Crazy Stalker Ex, please.

I am, for the record, having serious doubts about Lin's approach to personnel management. Although I'm actually not surprised that it's not her strength, because the RCPD basically has a SWAT leader in charge of the whole department, and that's ... maybe not ideal? I blame Toph, actually, because I'm pretty sure she started the whole "Metalbender runs the force" deal, and also because she probably sucked at management too. Anyway, I'm eager for the moment that Mako wipes the smirks off Starsky and Hutch's faces.

You know what I like about LoK? Its dedication to making capitalists evil. (Not gonna lie, I'm pretty keen for Asami to just lose the company outright.)

Finally, I did not see that ending coming at all, and next week is VERY FAR AWAY, and it isn't fair.

I really enjoyed this one, though you're right that the series is doing no favors to Lin as a boss right now.

Asami losing the company seems like the only long term narrative option. Having a 17 year old protagonist as the head of a multinational whose main assets are in war machines, on the verge of her world's WW1 doesn't seem entirely tenable. Unlike most of the fandom, I admire Bryke's commitment to making this one the show of narrative greyness but it's maybe a little too much, a little too far.

And no one is here yet but: Korra's dad is accepting these mechatanks in his guerrilla war against the Northern occupiers? Yeaaaah.

I'm just happy that Varrik, who I can't stand (and I felt so alone with this, fandom, he's not Tony Stark) is going to be a bad guy.
