Well. That certainly happened.
GUYS, I HAVE SOME FEELINGS
DO YOU KNOW WHAT I HAVE FEELINGS ABOUT?
WELL, YES, IROH
IROH IS GREAT
ESPECIALLY WHEN HE IS SHAMELESSLY FONDLING TEAPOTS AND GIVING HUGS, CAKE AND ADVICE TO TINY AVATARS
BUT WHAT UPSETS ME
IS THAT NOW JINORA IS TRAPPED IN THE SPIRIT WORLD, AND HER BODY IS JUST LIKE __________ AND NOW TENZIN IS DISTRAUGHT AND KORRA IS GUILTY, AND I JUST THINK LOTS OF PEOPLE NEED HUGS RIGHT NOW. IT IS VERY UPSETTING.
I AM ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO NEEDS A HUG.
Meanwhile, I have given the matter some thought, and I've decided that Wan Shi Tong is not a very good librarian. That decaying corpse is a workplace health and safety hazard, and I think he's badly overdue for some professional development.
On the other hand, foxes make surprisingly good cataloguers/reference librarians, so maybe more libraries should adopt that method, IDK.
Also I think that Unalaq is in no position to be criticising people's parenting, but for a second I had this fear that he was going to put Eska's soul in Jinora or Korra's body, and I'm really glad that didn't happen. EVERYONE'S SOUL JUST STAY RIGHT WHERE IT IS, OKAY?
ESPECIALLY YOURS, VAATU.
Apparently the Tumblr kids have found foreshadowing for this whole season in AtLA's "The Library", so well done this show. We've had some ups and downs, but at this moment, I am totally happy with everything you choose to be, PROVIDED JINORA IS OKAY. THAT IS NOT NEGOTIABLE.
Oh man, I just remembered that there was a point last year where I was CONVINCED Amon was going to capture Jinora, and I was RIGHT except for all the ways I was COMPLETELY WRONG.
I don't have much to say about Iroh being in the Spirit World, because, much like the whole of "Beginnings", it was pretty much perfect for me. OF COURSE he came back there. OF COURSE he is still dressed as an Earth Kingdom tea maker. OF COURSE he has friends. (Pretty excited the radish spirit from "Beginnings" is back and all grown up, though. CRANKY OLD RADISH MEN PLAYING PAI SHO.)
I bet Iroh sometimes wishes his family would visit the spirit world. And then Iroh II will come crashing through one day, and his great-great-uncle will give him tea and marvel that Zuko's grandson has Azula's power and Zuko's common sense.

Date: 2013-11-09 06:21 am (UTC)It is a positive sort of NOPING that appreciates the work put into that TORTURE, but AIRBABIES SHOULD BE PROTECTED AND KEPT SAFE!

Date: 2013-11-09 06:25 am (UTC)(... it doesn't help that the Airbabies will get me invested very quickly, but the fact that it was the well-orchestrated conclusion to an amazing episode just augh)

Date: 2013-11-09 06:40 am (UTC)AND SPEAKING OF CHILDREN, Unalaq's attempted soulbending reminded me of a theory going around Tumblr a while back, that Eska and Desna are the way they are because Unalaq has been feeding pieces of their souls to spirits.
I JUST REALLY WANT THAT TO BE TRUE, not only because it would be amazing, but also it would not only explain Eska's previous behaviour, but also offer a reset for her character, which she badly needs, and then I can love her as much as I love every other monotone sarcastic girl in media.

...
I think I'm ok now. I just needed to shout all those things.

Date: 2013-11-09 04:23 pm (UTC)It also might explain Unalaq's lack of paternal feeling or concern toward the Twins if they were, in essence, something he brewed up in a spirit-vat to serve his own ends, and that he doesn't think of them as human. He certainly treats them like spirit minions rather than children, to be sure, and he doesn't seem to regard them as individuals but as an inseparable team. What if his creation of Esna and Deska is somehow tied to the two spirit portals, perhaps an early attempt to unlock them, or as part of some elaborate endgame?
I'm also convinced now that Unalaq is helping Vaatu now out of some random love of destruction, but because he believes Vaatu will join with him the way that Raava did with Wan, and make him the Anti-Avatar. (Of course Vaatu has no such intention, but it serves his purposes to string Unalaq along with false promises until he gets the release he wants.)
And I refuse to believe that Jinora will not be okay. I JUST DON'T KNOW HOW YET, BUT SHE HAS TO BE OKAY.

Date: 2013-11-10 03:27 am (UTC)Am I the only one who thought that mountain looked a little like Mount Doom, and a whole lot like Death Mountain from Ocarina of Time? And Wan's whole chase scene at the beginning of "Beginnings" had me humming "One Jump Ahead."

Date: 2013-11-10 04:04 am (UTC)But the chase scene in "Beginnings" also had me thinking that I would pay a LOT of money for Studio Mir to animate Megan Whalen Turner's Queen's Thief series.

PS stick close to the books and the pacing will work out, probably."
