Now with added sparkle!
Jan. 20th, 2009 10:31 amI just finished reading The Bad Mother's Handbook by Kate Long. It's not the sort of thing I usually pick up, but I saw it at the library years ago, and thought it looked rather interesting. And then it turned up in the bargain bin at work, with Catherine Tate's face on the cover.
It's the story of a family of women: Nan, her daughter Karen (played by CTate in the ITV adaptation a few years back) and Charlotte. It's 1997, Charlotte is doing her A-levels, and has just fallen pregnant, while Karen uncovers a family secret and Nan slips further into senility. It's marketed as chick lit for older women, but that's hardly fair -- it's a decently written and thoughtful novel about disability, class, multiple generations of unmarried mothers, and the cultural gap between the north and south of England.
Anyway, I liked it, so naturally I've sought out the adaptation, and that looks rather win as well. Only, I was poking around the author's site, looking at pictures from filming, and playing the role of Charlotte's nerdy friend is a very young RPattz:

I wonder if the Twifen have uncovered this yet? HIS HAIR! HIS GLASSES! HIS BRIGHT PINK VEST! (David Tennant called, he wants to know when he can have his velvet coat back.)
