ICONZ

[personal profile] terajk gave me five icons to talk about!

This was said by one of my friends, possibly [profile] nostalgia_lj around 2007, summarising the fandom's tendency to focus on the sex life of a character who was intended to be depicted as asexual for long periods of his existence.

Another one from 2007! It was the year when "your face" and "your mum's face" were our standard responses to everything. She had a similar icon that said, "All your face are belong to us". I had this one. IT WAS GREAT.

Maybe I should just admit that 2007 was a really good year for icons! This was from the concept or promotional art from the Doctor Who comics featuring Ten and Martha. I really liked the art, and the way Martha is looking behind her with a sense of knowingness or anticipation.

This one's probably going to come down next time I need a free icon slot, so I'm a bit embarrassed that it was chosen! I made it in 2008, when a group of us were watching The Little Mermaid and came to the conclusion that Triton is a bit of a pimp -- not only in the way he's a badass mofo with some impressive accessories, but the way he puts his scantily-clad daughters on display. But since that time I've become more inclined to side-eye the glamorisation of men who profit from prostitution, so I don't use this much any more.

RIVER AND ELEVENTY! There's just something really awkward about this that I like -- she's grinning like it's a posed picture, but her gaze is off-camera, and Eleventy looks like he just got snapped sniffing her neck like a creeper. Or he's about to start nuzzling her. Either way, there's something down to earth and casual about it, like they're an everyday couple at a barbecue. But of course, the full image had River in handcuffs and the wreckage of the Byzantium all around them, and this is the end of a day where lots of people died.

Man, Sady Doyle is just firing on all two cylinders at the moment

I mean, I haven't managed to take Tiger Beatdown seriously since either Doyle or one of the guest bloggers unilaterally decided that Patti Smith didn't count as a female rock musician (...because she is insufficiently feminine), but it seems like every time Tiger Beatdown has crossed my radar this year, it's been failtastic.  Even when there's a good point to be made, it's lost in the sheer wankery that surrounds it.  You can only have one good female character in Harry Potter!  Not a single woman likes Moff-era Doctor Who

I mean, it gets embarrassing after a while.  These days I automatically think less of anyone who links to a Doyle or Tiger Beatdown article.  Because if nothing else, originality and she are not friends, so you can always find exactly the same point being made by someone else, in a way that isn't completely ridiculous.
