I just finished reading The Bad Mother's Handbook by Kate Long.  It's not the sort of thing I usually pick up, but I saw it at the library years ago, and thought it looked rather interesting.  And then it turned up in the bargain bin at work, with Catherine Tate's face on the cover.

It's the story of a family of women: Nan, her daughter Karen (played by CTate in the ITV adaptation a few years back) and Charlotte.  It's 1997, Charlotte is doing her A-levels, and has just fallen pregnant, while Karen uncovers a family secret and Nan slips further into senility.  It's marketed as chick lit for older women, but that's hardly fair -- it's a decently written and thoughtful novel about disability, class, multiple generations of unmarried mothers, and the cultural gap between the north and south of England.

Anyway, I liked it, so naturally I've sought out the adaptation, and that looks rather win as well.  Only, I was poking around the author's site, looking at pictures from filming, and playing the role of Charlotte's nerdy friend is a very young RPattz:

I wonder if the Twifen have uncovered this yet?  HIS HAIR!  HIS GLASSES!  HIS BRIGHT PINK VEST!  (David Tennant called, he wants to know when he can have his velvet coat back.)

I don't know how it reflects on me that I think he looks adorable -- and a little like Cillian Murphy -- but I stand by it.

Well, he's a very good looking guy when he's sober/not coated in a thick layer of white make-up.

Oh yeah, he really is. But I mean even right in that picture, with the glasses and the velvet and that face he's making. *shrug*

I read this book when I was visiting boyfriend's distant relatives in UK and it was on the shelf and I wanted something to read and this one caught my attention. :) I liked it. And I saw a few clips of the tv thing on youtube, but haven't watched it whole yet. Did you like it? I thought Robert did fine.

Did you get the book with the two in, Bad Mothers and Swallowing Grandma? I picked it up for bargain as well (also with Catherine Tate on the cover, if it's not the same version) but found Bad Mothers slightly awkward when the POV switched between daughter and mother. Otherwise I quite enjoyed it, especially since it's not the sort of thing I usually read.

Yes, that's the one! I'm not usually a fan of shifting first person POV like that, but I got used to it.

I just finished Swallowing Grandma, which was a bit darker and sadder. I'm having trouble deciding if I liked it or not.
