Whenever I see a comment about how Amy looks like a prostitute in her short skirts, I find myself wondering if this person has ever seen (a) a prostitute or (b) a fashion-conscious girl. 

I mean, seriously.  I was going to post this to whoisms, but I couldn't think of any remark more coherent and thoughtful than, seriously?

I had that same cognitive dissonance with Uhura too. Girls wear short skirts. Grown women wear short skirts. Especially straight denim ones. Its the uniform of the under-forty female of a certain disposition (ie: likes short skirts).

These people are idiots. And possibly blind.

Probably all this TOS I've been watching has warped my standards a little, because suddenly I'm all, "your skirt doesn't need built-in shorts to protect your modesty in times of alien attack? Yeah, it's long enough."

That. In fairness, I have one that only ever gets worn with heavy knitted tights becuase, um, well it is short even by my mum's standards. Which are low in the way only achieved by a woman who was not allowed minis as a kid in the 60s.

But, the boy enjoys it immensely and it looks awesome with my Middleman shirt, so my mother's opinion is moot.

I felt a bit differently about Uhura because that's a uniform and (in TOS) the men didn't have an equivalent (at least until Kirk got in a fight every five minutes and ripped his shirt off). I'm not so sure about the movie, because some women did seem to wear pants. Anyway. Amy isn't in the military or going to a Very Serious Job Interview - she's wearing everyday clothes.

Also, in the first few eps of TOS, there were ladies wearing trousers. My in-universe explanation for the sudden change is that Kirk time-travelled and fucked up something.

Aside from the movie, not only did the post-TOS Trek series show many female characters in pantsuit uniforms, but I've heard that TNG was making such an effort at gender-neutrality that in some scenes you could see men in the miniskirt uniforms in the background. I don't recall this personally, but it's been years since I've watched any TNG, and I saw it reported multiple times, so.

I do recall it personally, and it was great! It was only in the early parts of the first season that we saw either gender in the miniskirts, and after that everyone wore the same.

Seriously? A miniskirt is practically my uniform. Regardless of all the other fail going on with the prostitute name-calling and oh-a-girl-who-dresses-like-a-girl-can't-be-taken-seriously nonsense, miniskirts are way easier to run in than jeans, longer skirts, even a lot of shorts. Which is the most important thing when you are a companion. ;)

not that i am an expert in skirt-wearing, but surely it's much easier to run in a short skirt than a longer one? it leaves your legs a lot more free, i should think.

not that realism in costuming should really be a priority for people watching a show where DNA travels through fucking lightning and the doctor can use the power of prayer to regenerate his hair gel.

Depends on the skirt. The skirt my sister has on right now, being straight but split, is restrictive for even walking.
The uniform I had for school was a full length, fully pleated skirt and about the only restriction to your movement was the caution exercised to ensure you didn't stand on it when getting up from putting your bag in the library lockers.

Fullness is everything.

What was said below - it's about the fullness. If the skirt's going to be tighter, then it needs a slit/kick pleat somewhere or it needs to end before it interrupts the ability of the thigh to move forward freely. Amy's has all three - there's a bit of flare there, it ends fairly high but not abnormally so - hell Jo would think she was wearing a maxi skirt! - and I'm pretty sure I've seen a slit.

(Speaking as someone who's pelted all over rennfaires with more than one ankle-length skirt on at a time, length doesn't slow you down at all.)

Like a prostitute? I've seen teenagers wear riskier stuff and I hardly live in one of the world's metropoles. Amy wears what a woman her age conceivably would wear and presumably she feels good in it, so why the hell not?

I am joining the choir of general "what?" and was going to raise it with a "I am wearing a skirt that short today", but then remembered I opted for a slightly longer one that has florals on it. Oh well. People are clearly idiots. (I still don't have an Amy icon. Sadface.)

I'm Muslim, and I have a skirt almost that short! (Granted, I wear it with knee high boots so you can't see my legs, but it still makes my mum wince whenever she sees it.) It makes Amy a prostitute in the same way that owning a white coat makes you a doctor, i.e. not at all.
