Oh, Avatar, why must you end?

In order to postpone the end of Avatar another night, last night I rewatched episodes that introduced my favourite supporting characters: "The Warriors of Kyoshi" (Suki) and "Return to Omashu" (Mai).
(
weaverandom,
myniamh and I are going to cosplay the Kyoshi Warriors at Armageddon. It's gonna be EPIC.)
My reaction to these episodes:
"The Warriors of Kyoshi" - Show, I thought you were pretty crash-hot in your first season, but you totes improved in every way. I can't quite put my finger on how Suki evolved between her introduction and return, except the extent to which a recurring character is written differently to a one-off. But I love her nonetheless.
"Return to Omashu" - Dear Show, I love you a lot, and in general I think you did an exceptional job of fleshing out your enormous cast of complicated people. But on the whole, I think you need more Mai. Lots more Mai. How about a whole series about Mai? Think about it.
Because I have the self-control of a person with no self-control whatsoever, I've been following the recs and links that people gave me a couple of weeks back. Yes, I've been reading post-finale fic for the finale I haven't watched yet. Well, I was already pretty spoiled by Wikis and stuff.
The best thing about getting into a fandom via recs is that you start off with this happy, fluffy impression of a glorious fandom where all the fic is good and character bashing is unknown. So people have pointed me towards a whole lot of Mai fic, which I sort of wasn't expecting on account of how (a) she's Zuko's love interest, (b) she's a girl, (c) she's a girl who's not Katara, (d) she's a girl who's not Katara who's an antagonist for most of the series. I'm sure that somewhere out there is Die! Mai! Die! but I don't want to know.
Also, apparently fandom is really into Zhao. Which, okay, he's voiced by Jason Isaacs and his very first appearance involves challenging Zuko to a topless duel, but I wouldn't have picked it. Possibly because I sort of forgot about his existence once Azula turned up. WHAT? AZULA IS >>>> EVERYONE. JUST ASK HER.

Date: 2010-08-24 11:27 pm (UTC)Azula totally blew Zhao out of the water as a villain the second she turned up. I'll wait till you've finished to comment on why, I don't want to spoil anything.
