Last night, I was getting ready for bed, and I tripped over something (my foot, actually) and landed sort of oddly on my thumb, and I felt something snap.

There was no pain or bruising, so I put some ice on it and went to bed. Cut to this morning, when I've woken up to find a sort of hard, painful lump on my thumb and limited mobility. Here, have a picture of the lump. Okay, it just looks like your average knuckle, but that's with my thumb straightened out (as far as it will go, which I'll grant isn't all the way all of a sudden).

So that's great, because it's not as though I use my hands for work or anything. But it doesn't seem too painful to type, and it's not like the keyboard makes much use of the left thumb (...sometimes for the space bar, but I think that's it). I'm going to strap it to the rest of my hand and see how it goes.

I guess, what with our admin assistant having just been made redundant, I could be put on admin duties until it heals. But I'm pretty sure that would call for a pay cut. Bugger. Bugger, bugger, bugger.

My husband broke his finger on the 4th, and it ended up being far more serious than it seemed (e.g. minor reconstructive surgery). Not to freak you out, but if you can, do get it looked at.

Could it be a ganglion cyst? I got one a few years ago after hitting my hand to a doorframe, and it looked kinda like that.

I am relatively sure that's not how it works. Like, you could temporarily get put on other duties, but maybe it would be against the law for you to receive a pay cut? Workplace + company law was seven years ago for me, though.

Typists get paid per hour and then an "incentive" depending on speed, but you don't get the incentive for hours you're not actually typing normal work - breaks, admin, bad audio (slow typing) etc means you get paid less. So if she was on admin duties all the time, they wouldn't actually cut her pay, they just wouldn't give her the incentive.

Basically it's yet another way of them nickel-and-diming staff. I continue to be glad I left that place, although sad to leave Liz to the wolves there.

Get it checked out, cos it could cause a calcium deposit from trying to heal wrong, and you could have undue stress on your tendons, and THAT SHIT HURTS. I have a cycle on my left ring finger, and after 4 years (since it came back after surgery -- I've had it 6 years total), my left shoulder just pains and pains me, and the tendons in my left arm are all stretched and uncomfortable.

Another vote for running to a doctor at the first available opportunity. Joints without full motion are a big problem.

Hope you've had the time to let a doctor have a look at this. The Twitpic you posted looked rather painful.
