lizbee: A sketch of myself (PnP: Good thoughts)
[personal profile] lizbee
I made a pact with myself that I wouldn't go swimming until after my shower, and I wouldn't have my shower until after I'd done the dishes. Only it's too hot to do the dishes. THIS IS A DILEMMA.

In accordance with a meme, [personal profile] calapine asked to know about the following icons:

This is Dream Glow Barbie. Back in the mid-80s, she was the jewel in the Barbie crown, and I coveted her dearly. For though was she a pointy-breasted symbol of female oppression (said my mother, not necessarily in as many words), she came with a PINK BALLGOWN that GLOWED IN THE DARK.

When I was three, I wanted more than anything else to have a Barbie. But my mother demurred, feeling that little girls should play with proper little-girl dolls, not pointy-breasted symbols of female oppression. (I was also banned from having a Cabbage Patch Doll when that fad rolled around, because Mum objected to ugly dolls.) But I begged, and begged, and begged, and finally, Christmas of 1985, Santa brought me Dream Glow Barbie. Mum didn't look thrilled, but as far as I was concerned, Santa had the final say in appropriate gifts, and she would just have to accept it. One of my aunts made me a whole wardrobe of sophisticated Barbie-sized dresses, so that Barbie wouldn't have to wear a PINK BALLGOWN that GLOWED IN THE DARK when she was just popping out for a bit of milk (the satin Jessica Rabbit dress was far more appropriate), and I was as happy as a pig in mud.

Until Barbie and the Rockers came out. Mum never got over her animosity towards Barbie, and ROCK STARS and POP MUSIC were frankly beyond the pale. I didn't get a Barbie and the Rockers until 2009, when [personal profile] piecesofalice got one off eBay for my birthday.

Anyway, long story short, I felt that Dream Glow Barbie totally deserved to be remembered in icon form. Especially since the doll herself has since received several haircuts, and the dress has been ... well, remodelled. There comes a day in every girl's life where she thinks to herself, "Yes, it's a PINK BALLGOWN that GLOWS IN THE DARK, but you know what else would be great? A PINK TUTU that GLOWS IN THE DARK."

It's the contention of my grandfather that Doctor Who has been totally rubbish since it went into colour. And my dad confesses that no other Doctor has felt as real and Doctorly to him as Troughton.

I wouldn't go that far, but there came a point -- I believe it was 2007 -- where I was increasingly dissatisfied with Ten, and seeking solace in Classic Who. And the patriarchs are, in this case, right: Troughton is the Doctoriest Doctor of them all (although Eleventy gives him a very close run for his money), and really, he is just lovely to watch. Which is obviously why the BBC had to burn so many of his serials, because he was making all the others look bad. Pertwee probably put them up to it.

Keywords are: KISS HIM. Mr Collins is kind of like the ultimate Regency-era Nice Guy, but David Bamber, the dude who played him, seems both lovely and handsome.

But mostly I just like to have this comment because there are times when it is appropriate to scare people with Mr Collins's face.

"Fumble with time" is a fragment of the lyrics from "Always in my Head" by Psapp (video unrelated; I just needed a source of the song that wasn't a Draco/Hermione vid.) I listened to it pretty obsessively around 2006/2007, and it became a defining Romana song to me. Why Romana I? Because she's pretty and I like her.

This icon was spawned out of a conversation with [personal profile] weaverandom about a year ago. But what was it about? Well, Jane Austen, obviously. And the fact that she is a massive troll, although I can't remember what we decided she was trolling people about. Anyway, I made the icon for Weaves, then decided I liked it so much I'd use it also. Only, I don't think I've ever used it. Because I can't remember what it's about.

Speaking of [personal profile] weaverandom, the following conversation took place at Friday night cocktails last night:

Me: "It's so strange. David Tennant is getting married, and I don't feel sad at all. In fact, I think I might be happy for him."
[personal profile] weaverandom: "You've taken a step closer to being normal. You are now that much less interesting."
Me: "I'm just between man crushes at the moment."
[profile] suburbannoir: "Is that only because Zuko isn't real?"
Me: *prefers not to incriminate self*

YOU DON'T KNOW ME, OKAY?

Watched some of the special features in the New Beginnings boxed set this week. Davison said at one point that one of his biggest regrets was not chanelling Trought more, as he thought he was the best Doctor.

Tennant tried to be Davison, apparently. Anyone got a time machine to go play Peter a clip of himself twenty years later?

If it helps, my housemates spent dinner attempting to dissect their complicated feelings about Charlie Brooker marrying Konni Huq, being as she is the epitome of amazing female wonderfulness and they've worshipped her since forever, but he's an icon of all grumpy gamer boys and they have to respect that he is one of them and would, according to C 'give her a good home full of shiny things like a bower bird'.

I realise you already took care of this problem hours ago, but your dilemma was that you were doing it in the wrong order! Swimming, then shower, then dishes, is totally the right order.

I am pretty much at the same place with the Tennant/Moffett engagement, probably because I got married myself and cannot really begrudge it to anyone else?

Also, BARBIE AND THE ROCKERS. Man, I wanted. I did get a Barbie and the Rockers outfit for my Barbie, but that was about it...and now I can't track down the outfit online to show people anytime Barbie and the Rockers comes up (more often than you would think).

For one moment, I read this as "Tennant / Moffat engagement" and was like, "wait, what?".

And he would never cheat on Eleventy. True, that.

Hahaha, Louisa May Alcott was also a troll. I love learning stuff like that.

Your mother's opinion on the evil of Barbie dolls sounds quite similar to my parents' point of view. Only that they didn't consider her a "pointy-breasted symbol of female oppression" so much as "a frivolous thing who will turn our innocent, clever little girl into a bimbo interested in dressing up and attracting guys, the tramp!". Fortunately, I had two generous aunts and a grandma who were only too happy to spoil me rotten and give my Barbie dolls for Christmas and birthday parties.
