I like the idea of their being former concubines, actually. I've always wondered how they got stuck teaching Azula firebending when they themselves aren't firebenders - that always struck me as odd. Plus I love the idea of them driving the tank during The Chase - Mike and Bryan joked about it, but it's my head-canon.
