lizbee: A sketch of myself (DW: Amy and River)
[personal profile] lizbee
So, yes. That happened. I think I'm overstimulated.

SO THAT WAS EPIC AND AMAZING! THERE WERE SO MANY WOMEN! ONLY ONE DIED! ASIDE FROM THE SILURIAN FORCES, BUT THEY DID NOT HAVE NAMES OR PERSONALITIES AND USUALLY THAT KIND OF CANNON FODDER ROLE IS TAKEN BY MEN, SO I DON'T REALLY MIND IN THIS CASE.

- So Space Girlfriend is actually a Victorian lesbian maid/sidekick to a Silurian lady consulting detective. I SEE NO BAD HERE. For one thing, it involves VICTORIAN SILURIAN LESBIAN DETECTIVES, which is amazing. I feel like it might be the Moff's very special gift to [personal profile] prof_pangaea, but I'm happy to share.
- Then there was the Fat Skinny Gay Married Anglican Marines. I was very sad the Fat One died, but I'm glad Skinny One lived.
- The gay agenda is back in force. HURRAH!
- I actually think the force of my squee has given me a headache.
- So Baby Melody is Amy and Rory's naturally conceived and wanted child, who was born before the credits rolled, which makes me laugh a lot at all the outrage over rape and graphic scenes of childbirth horror and whatnot.
- Baby Melody is also River Pond. I started to suspect the Pond Baby might be River some time during this week, and mostly I was just very, very glad that I never wrote any combination of River/Amy/Rory. Then we got to the bit where River turned up and showed the Doctor her name, and I was all, YES, MELODY POND, RIVER SONG, I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE, THE MOFF. And then I was RIGHT! And it's kind of amazing, although the implications for the overall mythos are still flying through my head.
- For example, what if another companion conceived while on the TARDIS? Say, Barbara. Could there actually be a whole bunch of demi-Time Lords running around?
- The Doctor is like BFFs with a Victorian Silurian detective. Sorry, I just need to go back to this for a bit. All the fic, people, ALL THE FIC. Or maybe a spin-off?
- Lorna Bucket, the soldier girl, was also amazing. I liked her a lot, and I was sorry when she died, which basically makes her the ideal supporting character.
- The Silurian lady detective's name is Madame Vastra, btw. I had to check the credits, because I wasn't sure.
- Apparently all Silurians are in fact Scottish. This is fine by me.
- UNEXPECTED HUGH BONNEVILLE.
- I really liked the "assembling a motley army of friends, allies and one-off characters". It was a lot like AtLA's "Day of Black Sun", right down to victory turning into epic failure, key characters being captured, alliances and perceptions shifting, and attractive people waving swords around. All this was lacking was Mark Hamill shooting people with lightning, and honestly, I kind of feel like maybe there was enough going on already.
- COMMANDER STRAX, NURSE. I loved that he was AGGRESSIVELY NURTURING and uber-competent, and for all he talked about being a nurse as penance, he seemed really proud that he was good at it. And he had a good life - he was almost twelve. I feel like we've learned more about Sontaran culture through this single character than we have ... ever.
- I have to admit that when I wondered who River is, I wasn't really thinking about her parents. But this totally works for me, because I love stories about parents and children, and grown children, and seriously, this can't be the first time the Doctor has gotten emotionally involved with one of his companions' children.
- "Good men don't need rules." The Doctor has never been a good man. He just tries to be. And sometimes, even in trying, he fails. I dig that.
- MY HEAD HURTS SO MUCH! I DON'T THINK I'VE EVER HAD A SQUEE-INDUCED MIGRAINE BEFORE. Can someone come over to my house and rub my neck? Maybe I'll take a walk later and try to get the kinks out. This is almost as bad as that time I was so excited over "The Eleventh Hour" that I did a little dance and broke my toe.
- So if the clerics are Anglican, why are they dealing with Her Holiness The Papal Mainframe? (For future!religion, that's pretty much up there with "He's not the Pope! He doesn't look anything like her!") Or did I mis-hear the Anglican thing?
- The Headless Monks' War Prayer is epic. SOUNDTRACK, PLS.
- Melody dissolving away into flesh is just the worst thing ever. My heart broke.
- So ... what do we do now? LET'S KILL HITLER. But seriously, are we going to have some new companions, with Amy and Rory returning later? That would work for me. How about Madame Vastra and Jenny?
- Seriously, we have to wait three months for the rest of the season? THAT IS NOT FAIR. I shall maybe console myself by re-watching the episodes I liked (the opening two-parter, "The Doctor's Wife", key parts of the Flesh two-parter, this) and then making people write fic.
- I'd write fic myself, but apparently, if it doesn't involve Zuko element-manipulating teenagers I ... can't. Oh well.

I LOVED IT A LOT AND A LOT OF THINGS HAPPENED.

I feel like they gave us Victorian Interspecies Lesbians Solving Crimes in Space specifically to heal the wound left when Amy/River fanon became awkward (I wrote Amy/River that kind of stalled out in beta and never got posted, for which I am now kind of thankful.). I like to believe that canon is so beneficent to us. I loved them A LOT and want to know all about their (apparently sexy) adventures. Also fifty percent of the couples in this episode were space gays, which made me happy. If they get to come on the TARDIS for a while I will be very pleased.

Also, yes to the Sontarans, and in fact in general this episode actually rounded out some worldbuilding in a couple of different ways to me, which was a pleasant bonus to a big! flashing! explosions! season ender. (I loved that Commander Strax was prepared to lactate better than ANYONE HAD EVER LACTATED BEFORE. Commander Strax: All Nursing Done 110%).

Note Well: I've "Watched" all new Who since half way through Eccleston by watching my f'list's reviews... It's a bit like learning about elephants solely by eavesdropping on the three blind men of fable. Anyway -- let me check that I understand correctly:

According to The Moff, ordinary babies become Time!tot-ish through being conceived and/or gestating while riding in a Time and Space Machine?

If the answer to that is "Yes," or even "kinda, sorta," than I shall commence happy flaily hands.

('Cause that's very close to a private fan theory of mine that came to me oh... nine or ten years ago [!]) (I wrote it up and posted it to an LJ comm that has since been deleted). .

Now you may imagine that I've turned into the creature in my icon...

Perhaps it's time to repost my theory -- now less alternate and more canon -- I wonder if it's even on this computer, or one of the old ones in my closet. I may have to rewrite.

I got the impression that the soldier-clerics were Anglican but the Headless Monks were Catholic, and they had formed an ecumenical alliance against the Doctor.

I have written Amy/River, and I regret nothing (though I am unlikely to write any more at this point) Interspecies crossdressing Victorian lesbians with swords is pretty much the definition of my id, so I'm still happy :)

I am so happy to have been wrong in worrying about it. I am so happy, period. I liked where this ended up, I loved all the characters, and I am happy. Matt Smith's "OMG YOU ARE BABY!POND!" face was so cute!

For example, what if another companion conceived while on the TARDIS? Say, Barbara. Could there actually be a whole bunch of demi-Time Lords running around?

THAT WAS MY THOUGHT EXACTLY. (I was all "HOMG JOHNNY IS A TIME BABY" because I have that whole elaborate fanon about Ian and Barbara's kids and then I remember that she'd got knocked up during The Romans in my fanon so not actually in the TARDIS but STILL. HOMG HOMG. And oh shit, there's also my other fanon that Steven knocked up Dodo before he left to be leader of that one planet and that's why she stays behind in The War Machines, because she found out--and then Ben and Polly end up helping her raise the baby as an OT3 poly family--and holy fucking shit, that is a TIME BABY that are raising. And yes, I know I put way too much thought into the sex lives of One's companions.)

I adored this episode, but I have to admit that the whole way through, I kept thinking "The fic is going to be EPIC!"
