Here's some fun Korra speculation!

So, Tenzin's relationship with Katara is a bit interesting, isn't it? Respectful and loving, but Tenzin also seems to keep his distance. And his moment of rage when Korra points out that Katara supported her coming to Republic City!

It's interesting that his kids don't seem to know her that well -- the older two do, but Meelo seems to be meeting her for the first time. He'd be, what, five-ish? The kids don't seem all that familiar with the South Pole. And the family comes a really long way, only to stay for a night.

So is Tenzin just that wrapped up in his work in Republic City that he doesn't want to spend time away from it? While maybe Katara is caught up training Korra and apparently being her chief ally against the more protective elements in the White Lotus? Or is there some other source of tension between them? (Though so far it does seem rather one-way, and entirely on Tenzin's side.) Does look like he inherited her temper and her self-righteousness.

Or maybe I'm reading too much into about four minutes of screentime. But I do love stories about adult children and their parents, and people struggling with the legacies of previous generations. THIS WHOLE UNIVERSE IS LIKE CATNIP FOR LIZES.

Perhaps it's not that complicated. They just kind of like to keep their distance since that one time when Katara walked in on fifteen-year-old Tenzin and that interesting vegetable he was manipulating through airbending.
