lizbee: Chief Beifong sits at a table, looking unhappy (LoK: Lin is unimpressed)

Just for the record, 100 words exactly seems a lot harder now than it did the last time I tried this. My ego won't permit me to post a hundred and something words and call it a drabble (BECAUSE THAT IS WRONG! JUST INCORRECT AND INACCURATE! *EXPLODES ALL OVER THE INTERNET*) so here's, um, one double drabble and 150% of a drabble, times two.

Mythology

"How can you stand her?"

Pema smiled. "I like her."

"She's reckless. Self-absorbed." A couple of people paused to greet Lin. She offered a thin smile in return. "And if Tarrlok has his way, she'll get people killed."

"Well, Tenzin will agree with you there."

"I don't know how he can look at her." Lin's voice was low. "Avatar Aang was a great man. Korra's a spoilt child who hasn't been taught the world doesn't revolve around her."

"I never met Tenzin's father. He died a few years before I became an Air Acolyte."

"He was a great man," Lin repeated.

"Were you close?"

"He finished my earthbending training after I ran away from home. When my mother complained, he offered to fight her for the right to teach me. I couldn't have asked for a better master."

"I didn't know that."

"No. People only talk about the myth these days." Lin tossed back her drink and signalled for another. "Whatever. I don't care. He deserves better."

"So teach her," Pema snapped. "How else will she learn?"

"Tenzin won't like it."

"So fight him."

Lin smiled.

With Friends Like Jinora and Ikki...

Asami was cornered by two little girls.

"Are you Mako's girlfriend?" asked the smaller one.

"I don't know," she answered. "Who are--"

"I'm Jinora, and this is Ikki. "We're Korra's friends. So, are you going out with Mako?"

"Because it's not fair if you are," said Ikki. "Because Korra likes him." As emphasis, she added, "Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes him."

"It's okay. You probably didn't know."

"But now you do. So you have to stop."

"Right," said Asami. "Um -- thanks. For telling me."

"And you're going to break up with him, right?" asked Ikki. "Or else."

Asami raised her eyebrows. "Or else what?"

The girls exchanged a glance.

"Just or else," said Jinora.

"So there."

"Right. I'll keep that in mind."

Still, after that, Asami couldn't shake the sensation that she was being followed by two small, malevolent orange blurs.

And the wind was picking up.

The Succession

Four days after the funeral, Zuko summoned his daughter.

"I've decided to retire," he told her.

Her surprise -- shock, in fact -- was quickly masked. In that, she was Mai's daughter. But the proud, fleeting smile that replaced it was an echo of Azula. Or Ozai.

"That's hardly traditional."

"Tradition means hanging onto the crown until I die of old age, while you become rusty and the kingdom stagnates."

"One more innovation. I guess that's fitting. But what will you do?"

"Travel. Having two Firelords might become problematic."

"To say the least. Will you go to Republic City?"

"Maybe."

She watched the steam rise from her tea.

"I'll miss you."

The unspoken words hung between them. Then Zuko took her hand.

"Don't be afraid," he said gently. "I believe in you."

"Father--"

"I'm very proud of you."

This time she let him see her smile.

These are beautiful. I absolutely love the third one (well, all of them, but especially the third one).

Tenzin/Lin fight over the right to teach Korra how the world works? Fuck yes.

I'm having visions of seventy-year-old ladies Jinora and Ikki, zooming around Republic City's streets at night on their little air scooters and harassing couples.

AWW ZUKO you are a good dad. Still, his daughter must have been at least fifty when she took the throne. I wonder what she did all that time... Bet she was the most badass Princess-Admiral the Fire Navy has ever seen. Because the Navy and the royal family have special ties.

Yeah, I'm sure it would be good for the country to have someone take over who's been training for the job for a good three decades of her adult life, instead of this kid who just got plucked off a boat. At least Zuko had the travel part down.

She probably has children of her own, yeah. I'm half hoping for a scene of Old!Zuko with a passel of grandkids all fighting for the privilege of feeding the turtleducks with grandpa.

Heeeey, the current Fire Lord must have spent quite a bit of her travel/training period in Republic City. It's where stuff happens, after all. Zuko's daughter/Lin Bei Fong, Y/Y?

I bet Zuko was Nice Grandpa, while Grandma Mai lurked in the shadows and silently threatened to fillet the kids if they interrupted his naptime.

...I'm so sorry for this. I don't know where my head is these days. It's all this shipping.

Mai and Zuko: *having sex on Zuko's Fire Lord desk*
Grandkids: *burst through the door* Grandpa grandpa grandpa, look at what... O.o
Mai: Children! What happens at five o'clock?
Grandkids: *averting eyes* Naked Grandpa Time.
Mai: And what is the one rule of Naked Grandpa time?
Grandkids: Don't interrupt Naked Grandpa time!
Mai: That's right, now all of you get out.

Technically it would be Naked Grandma and Grandma time, but that doesn't really roll off the tongue.

I have the same trouble with "drabbles" that aren't exactly 100 words. I WAS THERE WHEN THE DRABBLE WAS BORN! YOU KIDS WITH YOUR <100 or >100 WORD DRABBLES GET OFFA MY LAWN!

These are lovely, though, and more words from you are always good. I think the Asami one is my favorite, because Ikki and Jinora are like Tumblr fandom, only cuter. But I am also insanely excited by the prospect of meeting Zuko's daughter (and old!Zuko!) in-series, so maybe the last one is my favorite. Which is not to say I don't love the first one, because...

I CAN'T DECIDE! I LOVE THEM ALL!

I like all of these, but the third is my favorite. I love seeing Zuko as a loving, trusting father, after what he went through with his own father.

Okay, so I followed you on both Tumblr and here after finding your Korra blogs, and OH THANK GOD SOMEONE WHO LIKES LIN AND PEMA AND DOESN'T BASH EITHER OF THEM.

Ahem. I loved the first ficlet, especially Lin's story about how Aang fought Toph to see who would teach her, and her comment that people only care about the myth. I love that her and Pema are friendly - BECAUSE YES - and how amused Lin is at Pema's suggestion she fight Tenzin. GOD, ALL THE OT3/POLY FIC WITH THEM.

Ikki and Jinora are perfectly childish, and I really do like Asami. I think she handles the assorted crazy way more maturely than I would in her place. And Zuko and his daughter the new Fire Lord are perfect, I need them on the show.
