I wasn't aware of any "adoption makes unrelated persons the legal equivalent of full biological relatives UNLESS IT'S SEXY!" exceptions, but admittedly family law isn't my area of practice. Regarding M.T. Anderson, if you haven't read his Octavian Nothing duology I can't recommend it highly enough--although, speaking of totally crying, fair warning.
