My ChicagoTARDIS post! Featuring Chicks Unravel Time, the back of Burn Gorman's head, and people being wrong about Star Trek: Voyager, which is an impressive feat at a Doctor Who convention.

And, switching fandoms:

[community profile] white_lotus's annual Lunar New Year Exchange is now open for sign-ups! This is the only fandom exchange I ever participate in, but I love it -- it consistently produces really good fanworks, and I'm curious to see what it comes up with now we have Legend of Korra to play with.

It was really cool to meet you in person! :D I saw you all in the lobby a few times after the chicks panel but was too timid to jump in. Possibly I also was in a costume with a corset that made sitting difficult, at least for a bit of the time. Round of drinks on me next year, if we make it out...

Anyhow, I enjoyed the Chicks Unravel Time panel even though I'd not read either of the books (I did pick them both up at the con though). I too was a bit taken aback at the remarks about re-appropriating "chicks". I guess I never heard that term from someone who was obviously using it in a derogatory or belittling meaning. In college my friend and I were self-proclaimed "math chicks". In grad school I was the only woman in my office of four and fielded what I called the "ACP" (Approximate Chick Perspective) on various topics. Perhaps it was a bit subversive, a bit short-hand, maybe also a bit of a way to say, "there is more than one mode of chick". It's like distancing yourself (from both the stereotypical masculine club and the stereotypical feminine club) and identifying yourself at the same time. But what's weird I guess is I might be less tolerant of "chick" among eg, a local pick-up hockey club that's mostly guys, as opposed to a more academic setting.

Sorry to hear about the second panel! Ugh. We were kind of leery on the subject matter for that one. I didn't want to go to a panel that would end up railing on the new era and harshing my squee, so I skipped it.

Thanks! I didn't know you and calapine were going to be there, though nonelvis had mentioned she would be there on the calufrax sign-up thread. I still tend to stay on lj and not branch out much to dw or tumblr, so I miss things. I did check out your tumblr pics; wow, that was quite the odyssey through the US (and also Canada) :D I'm glad it was a longer stopover for the long journey, and it looks like you had a really fun time :)

like that Six Era Who was rating SO HIGHLY IN THE US that the BBC ... didn't cancel it? Aw, even a Six apologist like me... can't take that seriously. *headdesk*

The problem with cons is that there are usually multiple panels I want to attend at the exact same time, and I have to miss all of them except one. I did get to Chicks Unravel Time and honestly was not surprised that the word "chicks" was questioned. In my experience, it's generally used as a negative way to refer to women. I guess it all depends on where you're coming from. Anyway, I started reading the book a couple of days ago and am enjoying it.

I don't think Anjli Mohindra need have worried about making a good impression. She seemed really sweet.

The It’s Stopped Being Fun, Doctor … But I Can’t Stop Watching! panel must have been bizarre. Makes me wish I'd been able to attend it, if only to hear some of the odder statements that were made.
