I was worried for a while about the back end of the season being rushed to air, and what this implied for the series' wellbeing. But then I remembered
weaverandom's complaints when AtLA was airing, and realised, no, Nick just fails at television programming forever. Like that time they were airing episodes in Canada ahead of the US, or the time the entire Sozin's Comet book was released a few weeks before the series finale aired. Or indeed, that time Nick's password protection was so weak, fans were just able to stream episodes of LoK ahead of time.
Anyway, four episodes in one day is a LOT to take in, so this is going to be jumbled up. That means, if you didn't watch/download the streaming finale on Nick.com, here be spoilers.
- I really think the Republic City Police Force needs to develop its own interior R&D/architecture department, instead of relying on external contractors. First we had Hiroshi designing their cars, now we have Varrick designing his own jail cell.
- My top four characters are Lin, Korra, Tenzin and Jinora, so this was ALMOST perfect in terms of Making Liz Quite Happy Indeed. It needed more Lin, except the plot didn't actually need her, so I guess that's okay.
- Remember that time Korra and Jinora saved the world? IT WAS PRETTY GREAT. I'd like to know more about how Jinora knew what she was doing, except I think a lot of it was basically instinctive.
- PLUS we got the Fog of Lost Souls, and a glimpse into the psyches of Aang and Katara's kids. Bumi's jovial front cracks; Kya fears that her family will tie her down (which is pretty heavy stuff when you couple it with her having given up a nomadic lifestyle to be with her mother after Aang died); and Tenzin, as everyone knows, lives in Aang's shadow.
- I have this theory with Bumi that he plays the clown because a lot of his work with the military was too grim to talk about.
- ALSO MORE IROH, and a rough idea of when he died. "About forty years" since he saw the Cloudbabies; Tenzin is about 51-52, so he would have been 11-12 when Iroh died.
- AND THEN THERE WAS SURPRISE ZHAO. Which was great, not just for continuity reasons, but also because, like many other people in fandom, I instantly thought, "Rufftoon will be so happy!" (Yes. She is.)
- (I am told that when Azula appeared in season 2 of AtLA, lots of fans were like, "Who is this terrible Mary Sue, and how dare she replace Wonderful Zhao?" I keep that in mind whenever anyone tries to say Avatar fandom has only just recently become terrible.)
- BUT TWO GIRLS, A TEENAGER AND A PREPUBESCENT, SAVED THE WORLD, YOU GUYS!
- Also, Lin Beifong was ALL THE SUPERHERO MOVIE POSTERS, and it was great.
- I looked at that post again, and then I looked at it some more, and then I texted
weaver and
selvage to complain that President Raiko's marital status is really interfering with Linshipping. BECAUSE LOOK AT THEM. And yet, I have an adultery squick. And Buttercup is played by Maria Bamford (with unexpected sexy voice), and I love her.
- I think I feel about Mako the way I feel about Don Draper -- I'm really engaged by his professional successes, and totally eh about his personal ones. But I loved the eventual break-up between him and Korra -- it felt just right for them, and not a moment too soon.
- Weirdly, I sort of came around to Bolin and Eska by the end, not because it thrilled my soul, but because it made me smile. Although I feel like LoK, as a whole, is a textbook example of how the best pairings work when each partner is introduced as a character in their own right first, then you set them up together.
- So Korra no longer has contact with her other lives. It's pretty clear in the Avatar universe that everyone reincarnates (excepting those few who go into the spirit world, either voluntarily like Iroh, or ... not), but only the Avatar had any knowledge of or contact with their former selves.
- It's heartbreaking to lose that connection, but it does mean the Avatar is no longer quite so separated from the rest of the world. Plus, I'm not sure the past lives are necessarily helpful. Aang consulted Roku a lot, but he was basically the worst mentor ever (I suppose he technically has to cede that title to Unalaq now, but come on, the guy sucked). For Korra, the knowledge that the connection should be there was a source of guilt and stress.
- I am, however, curious to see if the next Avatar after Korra can communicate with her spirit. It kind of makes sense to, like, reset every 10,000 years? Like, all those past lives are clogging up the spiritual RAM? IDK.
- It's a devastating change, but a brave choice, and one that indicates just how high the stakes were, and how great the cost of victory is.
- Season 1 ended on a safe note, with the status quo effectively restored. Season 2 ends with a dramatic change, not just for the Avatar, but for the whole world. How will the return of spirits affect people? Does Korra realise that, along with the fluffy flying bunnies, she's just given Koh carte blanch to wander around the material world? Will Iroh take to popping up in the Fire Nation palace and making his descendants drink tea?
- Overall, I thought this year's pacing was much better than last year's, and the dialogue was smoother and less on the nose. The subtext was sometimes questionable, but didn't bother me hugely. (I'd no doubt be singing a different song if it had affected characters I care about.)
