Continuum X: Call for vids

As many of you probably know, I'm on the committee for Continuum, a Melbourne science fiction/fantasy/genre convention held annually in June. (Some of us are currently fighting to extend "genre" to "TV series about ballet". So far the rest of the committee is dubious.)

For the last two years I've run a vidshow, but this year, in addition, I wanted to screen vids based on Australian source (either visuals or music or both). I will accept both premieres and existing vids, in any format that will play in VLC. (Higher quality is better, for obvious reasons, but don't feel you need to go overboard.)

Content-wise, my vidshows generally have a blanket "choose not to warn" status, and I'm pretty much open to anything. Except talky face and wrong aspect ratio. The only limitation is that the video and/or music must be Australian.

Of course, that can be a grey area! For example, most of Baz Luhrmann's movies are filmed here, but Strictly Ballroom and Australia are the only ones that are actually set in Australia. (OTOH, an overview of his entire work would count.) Crowded House counts, because it was formed in Melbourne and 50% of its original line-up were Australian. (But we can't nab Lorde, much as I'd like to.) Don't even get me started on the problem of Farscape. My totally arbitrary preference is in favour of flexibility, but, you know, to a point. (OTOH, I would absolutely accept a Miranda Lawson vid.)

I have a REALLY REALLY OLD vid I made, back when vids were made by hooking up two VCRs and crossing one's fingers, made before DVDs existed, so the quality is pretty terrible. I'm inclined not to bother you with it, but it does count as Australian, because the music is The Little River Band, "Playing To Win". The fandom is Blake's 7.

Kylie Minogue (I would pay someone money to do a Thor vid to 'I Should Be So Lucky' with malicious intent, and send the audience screaming out into the night trying to claw both the earworm and the pun out of their head. I'm not a very nice person.)
Nick Cave. Lots of great songs for vids. 'Death Is Not The End' with a whole lot of characters who died temporarily would be hilarious.
Natalie Imbruglia. Because 'Torn' would be the best LKBV.

I would dearly love to see a Keating! vid, actually, using the version the ABC screened a couple of years back. Maybe an Auspol vid? I'd warn for Tony Abbott, of course.

I was going to ask about Phryne Fisher! Is it "genre" enough?

IDK about the TV series, but in the books there are supernatural shenanigans. Ghosts, psychic Phryne, etc.

ooh! i haven't gotten that far. I just started reading the books a couple of weeks ago, i'm only up to Death at Victoria Dock.

Oops. Didn't mean to spoiler you. It's still squarely detective genre not fantasy, it just seems to be part of the author's worldview. Like, that some people just do have supernatural experiences, so that happens in her books. And it's not an essential part of the plot usually. The hypnotist in Murder on the Ballarat Train is an example of that, actually: his hypnotism is way more a magic power than it is how hypnotism works in the real world.

I'm going for a wide definition of "genre" for this. If it exists, it's totally genre. A genre. Some kind of genre.

I have no idea if anyone has done any, but this is an appropriate time to bring out my theory that almost every song Nick Cave has ever written is appropriate for either Angel or Spike at some point in their character development.

I tried and failed to vid AFL (Jeff Farmer / bloc party's the prayer), because of issues acquiring source. But I do have a Sarah blasko (we won't run) vid to children of men. Film is very British, and sad, and the vid is spoilery, so not sure it's the best for an Aussie vid show. http://apatheia-jane.dreamwidth.org/281819.html. But it's a Sarah Blasko vid, which I strongly feel the world needs more of.
