Where do you publish your work?

I usually cross-post to DW, LJ and Tumblr, then give it a few days, fix any errors I’ve spotted, and post to AO3. Every few months, I dump everything on FF.net.

(My last fic, “Breakfast”, I posted to Tumblr only because I wrote it in my lunch break at work and just wanted to get it out. I need to cross-post, but I’ve been busy cleaning and sleeping.)

What medium/application/etc. do you write in or with?

Usually GoogleDocs, but I did “Breakfast” in OneDrive, since I’m paying for Office online anyway.

I often handwrite large chunks of fic in notebooks, especially when I’m stuck and need to slow down and consider my next move.

Do you collaborate with others?

Nope! I once wrote a fic with @branwyn-says, but her writing is poetic and oblique, whereas mine is quite workmanlike, so it was quite challenging!

How much editing do you do before you publish?

Depends on the length of the story. “Not enough”, probably.

Do you listen to music when you write?

Never. But I often get ideas and do plotting to music.

How do you decide what to write about?

I dunno, there just comes a point where the idea in my head is so insistent, and clear, that I know it’s time to write it.

I’ve worked hard in the last few years to shake the idea that every fic must be an unproblematic cinnamon roll, and that every fic needs to surpass the one before, and to put something new into the world. Sometimes I need to stop, sit my brain down and go, “No, this is 2000 words of snuggling, and that’s okay.”

When do you write?

Usually on my lunch break at work. I’m very lucky, in that my employers are quite okay with letting me work on other stuff during quiet moments, but I try to keep that time for original writing.

It’s hard when you have a full-time job and limited spoons, and original writing projects on top of those issues. I have to make time, even if it’s just five minutes here or there.

How often do you write?

Depends how urgent the idea is, and how busy I am. And how much energy I have, and how much it’s going to other projects – especially with this broken foot, I’m finding that my spoons are even more limited than usual.

But fic uses a different kind of energy to original writing – I was exhausted after revising three chapters of the boarding school novel in three days last week, but was still able to complete 1100 words of fic.

Do you take requests? Why/why not?

I do! But I explicitly don’t make promises about whether or not I’ll ever finish them.

Having said that, if anyone ever wants to come into my mentions and talk about Lin Beifong, they are more than welcome.

Is there any genre or type of story you want to write but are hesitant to?

I’d like to write a long, plotty fic about Republic City politics, but I don’t actually have a plot in mind.

Any inspirational quotes, videos, tricks, articles, etc. that help you stay motivated?

I wrote “How do you write like you’re running out of time?” in my journal in my fanciest penmanship. Thanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Go to page 7 of your wip, skip to the 7th line, and share 7 sentences.

[I overshot the seventh sentence, but in fairness, it was a stupid place to leave it.]

Ikki raised her eyebrows. “I’m fifteen.”

“Suit yourself.” Lin poured herself one glass of baiju and retrieved her noodles from the icebox – two days old, but they didn’t smell so bad … she saw Ikki’s face and grinned.

“Whatever you’re here for, it’s not to judge my diet.”

“I have some questions,” Ikki said.

“Okay.”

“And I need you to be completely honest.”

“I’m a famously bad liar.”

Ikki said nothing.

“Fine.” Lin sat down. “You have my word.”

“Good.” Ikki swallowed. Steeling herself, Lin guessed. “When did you and my dad start having sex?”

A bummer indeed. My sympathies. Any idea how long it will take to get better? (I've never broken a foot)
