Apparently, Tumblr's long-term future is in doubt

Which should come as a surprise to no one whatsoever, given its dysfunctional code, obnoxious advertising and -- most importantly -- the fact that it's owned by Yahoo. It's not going to disappear overnight, obviously, but like a lot of people, I'm suddenly thinking about the need for back-ups.

A lot of the stuff I post there is ephemeral, but some of it might be worth keeping ... or at least, I might look back at it one day and smile. So I'm going to go through my archives and reblog stuff with my "and dreamwidth" tag, that triggers the IFTT crossposting recipe.

Accordingly, people on Tumblr are going to see a lot of old stuff from me, and should blacklist "and dreamwidth" if that's going to be tedious. And people on DW and LJ ... well, I'll go in and add cut tags to longer posts.

I'm not sure of the etiquette of crossposting reblogs, whether text or other people's fan art. Thoughts?

Tumblr in trouble? I haven't been there for a few days because it started playing audio from nowhere and I can't stop it. Arg.

New XKit has a way of blocking that, though I haven't installed its blocker yet because apparently my two other adblockers might interfere with it. Some browsers, like Firefox, Chrome, and Safari, offer a way you can mute a tab (in Safari, you just click on a little "mute" icon in the tab itself), so that could work for you, too.

I am not expecting Tumblr to disappear overnight; all Yahoo! did was write down its value, which is just an acknowledgement that they paid too much for Tumblr, which, DUH, everyone but Yahoo! already knew. But it *does* mean that unless someone figures out how to successfully monetize Tumblr without driving away the user base, the site will eventually disappear, likely a few years from now.

I didn't know I could mute a tab either! *experiments* right-click menu! I use right-click a lot, but it never occurred to me to try it on a tab header. Thanks, that will be useful!

Thoughts on crossposting reblogs: better not to, I think. If it is worthy, link to it, but I don't think people would be pleased to have their content reposted on another platform. Reblogs are expected on tumblr, that's the way tumblr works. Permission is implicit. But reposting elsewhere, not the same.
