I watched last week's episode at Continuum, while hiding from people in the committee room, and made a terrible discovery: iView streaming quality is much, much better over 4G on an iPad than over the NBN on a new desktop.
Guys.
That was pretty much the highlight of Gatiss's episode, so let's move on to the triumphant return of Rona Munro.
Gatiss: I cannot possibly have a single black character in my episode unless you show me absolute proof that there were people of colour in the British army in the 19th century.
Munro: I have two black Roman soldiers. One of them is gay.
(Typing that out made me realise, again, just how low this bar is. Well done, everyone, but let's continue to do better than that.)
Anyway, this was no "Survival", but it was a good, creepy episode. Like a lot of this season's stories, it hasn't done much that's new, but it's executed old ideas in an entertaining way -- and sometimes that's enough. Especially after the less entertaining executions of the last few weeks.
I do wonder if the original draft of this script was written for Eleventy and the Ponds -- not just for the Roman stuff, but the whole mood, with the eerie music and ominous birds, reminded me strongly of season 5 and 6. (And if you take out the Missy scenes at the end, you have enough time for a subplot where Rory searches for Amy in the missing two days.)
This is not to say that you could just pick the script up wholesale and change the names, because the Doctor is very Twelve, right down to being kind of terrible in his abrasiveness towards Kar. But I wonder.
But the really important thing this week is MISSY AND THE DOCTOR AND HOLDING HANDS AND HOPE AND I THINK EVEN SHE ISN'T SURE IF SHE'S PLAYING HIM AT THIS POINT. SO MANY FEELINGS, YOU GUYS, SO MANY FEELINGS. AND I'M NOT EVEN A DOCTOR/MASTER SHIPPER, REALLY. I JUST LIKE IT WHEN TIME LORDS LOVE OTHER TIME LORDS.
