lizbee: A sketch of myself (Default)

I didn't forget about this meme, I just ... didn't do it on the weekend because I was busy napping.

21. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote?

When I was about eleven, I started writing what I fondly believed was a Star Trek: The Next Generation tie-in novel. I believe it consisted of about 800 words of Picard/Crusher shipping and a Mary Sue.

After I found out what fanfic was ... okay, I started a lot, but the first I ever finished and posted was --

Look. It was Voyager fandom. It was Janeway/Chakotay. It was a Savage Garden songfic. That's all I'm saying.

22. Is there anything you regret writing?

If anything, I regret the things I decided not to write because they revealed too much id, or didn't add anything new to the world, or whatever wanky excuse I had for not writing the stupid idea in my heart.

There are certainly fics where I wish I'd done things differently, or known that triggers existed and should be warned for. But that's just part of the process of growing.

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

"The Princess of the Dragon Flats" was the first long fic I wrote where I felt like I finally understood how structure worked -- that is, it didn't have a saggy middle. And it was very plot driven, complete with foreshadowing I didn't even notice until I reread it recently.

24. What fic do you desperately need to rewrite or edit?

"Girl Most Likely". I don't need to rewrite it, but I posted the first third to AO3 -- it's otherwise available only via the Wayback Machine -- and had to restrain myself from "fixing" everything. (I settled for correcting a few stray commas and otherwise not looking too closely at it.)

25. What’s your most popular fanfic?

Probably "Solution", a very short, unremarkable Sokka/Zuko ficlet that gets way more kudos than it deserves. I assume because it's m/m?

Other than seeing that one title come up in my kudos emails all the time, I don't really pay attention to stats.

26. How do you come up with your fanfic titles?

Open LyricWiki. Search: "Vienna Teng". Search: "Dessa".

27. What do you hate more: Coming up with titles or writing summaries?

Yes.

28. If someone were to draw a piece of fanart for your story, which story would it be and what would the picture be of?

"If", my meme friend? Back in November, [personal profile] radiolaires illustrated "a fountain of blood in the shape of a woman" with an amazing sketch of Kat and Philippa fighting Klingons. Sometimes I just sit and stare at it.

If I had to drop a hint ... okay, I described mirror!Kat's uniform very specifically in my WiP because I've tried several times to sketch it, and I just can't handle all the technical stuff that goes into the mirror universe uniforms. But that's less of a "please, someone, for the love of God, draw this!" and more "I have a very clear mental picture, and it involves gauntlets".

29. Do you have a beta reader? Why/Why not?

[personal profile] nonelvis has been beta reading for me for going on a decade now. I live in terror that one day she'll tell me to stop, or that our tastes or fandoms will diverge dramatically.

(I don't get her to beta everything. I'm on my own with babyfic.)

30. What inspires you to write?

I hope no one will be shocked when I admit that I tend to fixate on a character or two, and build from there.

I usually start with a scenario, or some kind of interchange, and then it becomes a scene, and maybe I'll come up with a plot that enables that scene to happen, and there'll come a point where that whole concept is fleshed out and I realise that it's time to start writing.
