Real life is very straightforward:
The sleeping is getting a bit out of hand, but I think that's related to some health issues I'm having examined next week.
I've changed it up by joining my local YMCA (*does the dance*), which has classes and a little gym, and seems to attract patrons of a wide range of ages and body types. Also the local roller derby team trains there, which is terribly cool but also makes me regret (again) that my assorted ankle and foot injuries mean that rollerskating is the very worst sport I could possibly pursue.
General TV stuff
Probably the best thing I've seen recently is Killing Eve, but I also loved season 2 of GLOW, which gave more time to the supporting characters while also flipping the dynamic of season 1 by making Debbie the less likeable of the protagonists. Downright hateable, in fact, but I could also still sympathise with her. That's a really hard line to walk, so, nice job all around, team.
I'm currently watching the four episodes of Major Crimes that guest starred Jayne Brook. It's ... well, it's the penultimate storyline of a six season procedural, but it's a procedural, so I feel like I know everything important about the regular characters already.
Mary McDonnell has had a hell of a lot of work done on her face, which is a valid choice and all, but distracting because I know what she used to look like. And it's weird when she's standing next to Brook, who is nearly ten years younger but looks much older and has a full range of movement in her forehead.
(Also, the text and subtext around gender, sex and assault are quite at odds, and feel extremely dated. Which is troubling, because it aired in late 2017 and is a not at all subtle #metoo story.)
I realised halfway through the first episode of this arc that the Major Crimes showrunner is the new guy in charge of Discovery -- which, if nothing else, maybe increases our chances of getting a McDonnell guest appearance. But that seems as good a way as any to segue into... Discovery at SDCC!
I'm not saying I set my alarm so I could watch the livetweets of the Discovery panel ... but you all know I absolutely did. And then I watched the trailer a bajillion times, and engaged in wild speculation in a variety of places.
My current feelpinions are as follows:
- work
- write
- watch TV and quilt
- listen to podcasts
- read
- sleep

My current feelpinions are as follows:
- I'm not quite as excited about Disco!Pike as I was. I liked him in "The Cage" (barring that bit where he's fantasising about chucking it all in to become a sex trafficker) for his thoughtfulness and introspection, and it seems -- based on the trailer and some of the interviews Anson Mount has given -- that Pike has moved on from that point, emotionally, and is more of a traditional heroic type. You know, what the network wanted in the first place.
- However, it's a trailer and promotional interviews, and one of Disco's trademarks is that the final product is wildly different from what was on the box. These are people who invented a whole fake actor to camouflage a twist. So I'm not taking my ball and going home just yet. (But I'm also not rushing to write Lorca/Cornwell/Pike even though I've been shipping that since season 1. For one thing, Mount is a bit younger than I had pictured for Pike, and too young to be a contemporary of the other two.)
- I still think that this is another fake-out, and Number One will be the captain of Discovery for season 2. Rebecca Romijn is a relatively big name for a cameo or supporting guest appearance, and Number One is an interesting character who hasn't even been touched by the Kelvinverse movies.
- Plus, the fact that all we've seen of her so far is her hands, holding her insignia ... obviously we're all eager to see what new!Number One looks like, but it feels like they're building up to something.
- (My take on Romijn's casting is that she isn't remotely the type of actress I had in mind, physically, but ... well, she's very Christine Chapel, and that's quite appropriate. Get you an actress who can do both.)
- I am ... not opposed to Linus the Sneezing Saurian, but I hope we get more time with the bridge crew ahead of the guy who doesn't cover his mouth when he sneezes.
- So at least part of the plot for season 2 is Discovery: The Search for Spock. I'm into it. More flashbacks to Sarek's garbage parenting. More insight into Michael. And I'm quite fond of that pointy-eared hobgoblin in his own right.
- Tig Notaro has had exactly one line as Jet Reno, and I would already die for her.
- Here is an incomplete list of characters I am open to shipping her with, in approximate ascending order of rank:
- Yeoman Colt
- Yeoman Rand
- Ensign Tilly
- Commander Burnham
- Captain Georgiou (deceased)
- Rear Admiral Drake
- The unnamed rear admiral who turns up at Michael's trial, and other points throughout the season, I can't even work out who her actress is, but she's an Asian woman in her forties (?) who never speaks
- Vice Admiral Cornwell
- Emperor Georgiou (deposed)
- I haven't watched the full video of the panel yet, but I'm told that
sohotrightnow asked if Lorca had been open to eating Saru if the need arose, and the answer included the phrase "like chicken nuggets".
- And the answer to "is Lorca coming back?" was, of course, "maybe". I'm like, there is no point even asking that question, because that's the only answer we'll get. Prime!Lorca is off the board until such a time as his return will serve Michael's story. Not his, and definitely not Kat's. That's what fic is for.
- The cast remain delightful nerdy angels, and I love them. Sonequa Martin-Green's Instagram is thoroughly enjoyable.
- Can I just take a moment to side eye the Trek merch division and say that I cannot begin to imagine why, in this hellscape of 2018, they would think it's a good idea to sell Make the Empire Glorious Again caps and shirts?
