lizbee: (Star Trek: Tilly and Michael)

I started writing up a Disco post, then realised I'd just end up repeating myself on my blog in a few days' time.

Suffice to say, the last couple of weeks have represented a very restrained, traditional type of Star Trek, which is not inherently bad, but I was concerned that Discovery is playing it safe in season 2, and consequently pulling back on some of the things that made me love season 1.

Fortunately, this week marks a return to TWISTS and TURNS and SHENANIGANS and QUESTIONABLE PACING DECISIONS, and that only describes two of the three-and-a-half plotlines.

Remember, the term "space opera" was derived from "soap opera". I AM DELIGHTED BY EVERYTHING THIS STUPID SHOW IS CHOOSING TO BE.

Okay, well, I do have some notes. But that's half the fun.

Also the official website is selling Section 31 merch, and I don't need it, but I want it, and I'm also very ashamed of that.

I feel like I missed a ton of plot points with this one. like that revelation at the end with Michael and Amanda. (Spoilers OK?)

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it were the encoding of the episode I downloaded or what, but I missed a crapload of dialogue, too.

IMO, I'm more pissed off at Sarek and Amanda. It wasn't Michael's job to protect Spock. Then again we know Sarek's a crappy parent.

It's bad enough that I covet the new Disco shirts (they are So. Good.) but I do not need Section 31 merch, I am squeamish about Section 31, and I totally want Section 31 merch. Goddamn it. Stupid sexy black ops.

Hah. Torchwood wasn't really, though. Among my many problems (chief among them being the treatment of WOC and taking Jack from Team Wild Card to Team Leader without in any way earning it, and thus making him boring), they seemed unaware of why Secret Organisations Which Are A Bit Evil And Cool exist in the first place. It felt like they wanted to write a police procedural but with aliens, which I guess would have been fine, but generally there are secret organisations when the public would object to what they're doing. At that era of DW, the public has had enough exposure to aliens that keeping them secret is more of a liability than an asset (unless Torchwood is actually doing something evil in the service of protecting the Earth. Which we don't really see.).

Whereas the Federation is Good and Benevolent but sometimes it requires Bad People to do Bad Things to ensure that we all get fully automated space communism, and I am so here for that. Especially when they made its face my favourite character on Disco.
