Star Trek meme: Day 5 - Saddest Event
Aug. 25th, 2019 08:59 amThis one's easy for me -- the final twenty minutes of the second season finale of Discovery.
Not just because they blew up my admiral, although I am very much not okay with that, but ... I think they were going for a bittersweet sense of loss and hope, with Discovery jumping to the future, and leaving the recurring supporting cast behind to move on without them.
But we got the writers essentially going, "Welp, sure, there's a long history of diverse people, especially African American women, being erased from history, but let's have our mostly white heroes conspire to erase the achievements of Michael Burnham and her compatriots -- but it's okay, they'll feel bad about it!"
It's a level of tone deafness that makes me unspeakably sad and angry. Like, I'm not supposed to walk away from this series hating Spock, but I kind of do, a bit.
And the whole finale revealed a total lack of faith in the show's premise that was really disappointing. I know I've ranted about this at length in my podcast AND my blog, but they were answering questions that were never being asked in good faith.
It's possible the show can come back from this, but there are still no African American women in the writers room, as far as I can see, and I can't help but feel like the lack of that voice and experience is only too obvious.
ALSO they blew up my admiral.

Date: 2019-08-25 01:23 am (UTC)I really hope that season 3, with more behind the scenes stability and without the baggage of the 23rd century, comes good again. (I would also laugh if, say, Discovery returned to the 23rd century in episode 5 -- maybe to the movie-era or something -- and Michael got to confront Spock about that whole erasure from history thing.)
(Obvs it wouldn't be the movie-era, they don't want to recast Spock again. But, you know.)

Date: 2019-08-25 01:38 am (UTC)It's very interesting to think about what the series might have been like without the Klingon and Spock plots, but I have the feeling those were the major selling points. I don't like them being erased from history, but yeah, maybe S3 will be better??
