No spoilers, but...
Dec. 18th, 2022 01:41 pm...it's wild to me that there are people calling for a live action Janeway series (from the Star Trek: Picard team, of all people) when, in eight 20-minute episodes, Star Trek: Prodigy has had better writing for Kathryn Janeway than whole seasons of Voyager.
I mean. The scene in "Mindwalk" where Admiral Janeway comforts holo-Janeway? AMAZING. Kate Mulgrew's performances are always great - you can tell she's a seasoned voice actress, whereas Robert Beltran is, ummmmm, there - but holo-Janeway really sounds like she did in the early years of Voyager, whereas the Admiral is Kate now. And then there's her third performance as Dal-in-Janeway's-body.
(I don't even LIKE body swap episodes!)
Anyway, I got distracted talking about the performances, but the writing is just so GOOD. Right down to the detail of incorporating Una McCormack's feminist update to the Jeri Taylor backstory (you can tell by the use of the "Kate" nickname) and the bit where the hologram recovers her memories and she and the Admiral are together as they learn of Chakotay's fate.
Ask me about my crack theory that (a) the Living Construct is a sentient entity; and (b) will become a character in their own right, merged with holo Janeway and played by Kate Mulgrew.
I feel like people are not watching Prodigy because it's a kids show, or it "looks like Star Wars", or there's just a lot of Star Trek out there and our time on this earth is finite, but really, it's what Picard could have been: an exploration of legacy AND a fresh story with new characters.
