Yes, politics.
Aug. 15th, 2009 09:21 amThe great thing about the health care debate is that it's a really handy way to spot the most contemptible people on the internet.
Of course, I would say that, coming from a country where the abolition of the public health system is sought only by extremists and the US pharmaceutical industry, and the slightest change in the system is met with howls of "YOU'RE TRYING TO MAKE US MORE LIKE AMERICA!"
Also, I grew up hearing the mantra, "Just be glad we don't live in America, where people die or go bankrupt because they can't afford doctors". Especially in my teens, when Mum was too sick to work and we were basically destitute, and I had two operations in as many years, and then my brother got whooping cough.
I was lying awake thinking about this last night, and then I started getting chest pains. Which was either a sign I'm too invested, or indigestion. But it really horrifies me when I see people I had previously thought were quite decent, saying they wouldn't want their tax dollars paying for that single mother or her kids to get health care.
