SO APPARENTLY CAPTAIN JANEWAY WAS KILLED OFF WITHOUT FANFARE IN A STAR TREK NOVEL?  NOT EVEN A VOYAGER NOVEL BUT A TNG ONE?  BECAUSE PETER DAVID DIDN'T LIKE HER, AND POCKET BOOKS WANTED TO "SHOCK" PEOPLE?

YOU CAN'T GO AROUND DOING THAT TO MY FAVOURITE CAPTAIN!  IT'S JUST--

*WEEPS*

NOT THAT THE BOOKS ARE CANON OR ANYTHING, JUST, WHAT?

It's part of Peter David's witty plan to win hatred in every corner of fandom. For Phase II of said plan, he got a popular LJ comicbook comm shut down for giving him a bad review. Maybe he was jealous of Howard Mackie?

That was not a good start.

I first encountered him through his X-Factor comic (the new X-Factor, not the old one which I think he also wrote some of). I loved the comic a lot at first, but then I made the mistake of reading David's blog, where he revealed himself to be the sort of asshole who whines about "reverse racism." And also the sort of asshole who writes an apparent coming-out scene for a character long speculated to be bisexual (Julio Richter aka Rictor), but then goes around saying that the character didn't really come out and he only wrote it to fuck with fans' heads.

I stopped reading X-Factor soon after that.

(it is much like I refuse to believe that the Star Wars books ever killed off character M and character C)

This is why the official fanfiction fails, because it has semi-canon standing. Dammit. Why do all EUs end up doing this to us?! For a while, the EUs are good (hi, Timothy Zahn!), but eventually they all fall into a massive hole of suck. Much like 3,000 chapter fanfiction epics.

This. I pretty much refuse to read anything EU that isn't written by Zahn. And even then, I wait until there are reviews out before I decide. I just don't trust them any more.

Authors need approval to kill a major character or make any major change, so it wasn't just the author, it was TPTB as well.

She doesn't really die, she kind of goes down fighting the Borg and then Suzie Q rescues her and takes her off to have femslashy adventures.

That's what I heard, anyway, because I haven't read them yet.

Also it was David Mack. I should really correct that anon on [livejournal.com profile] trekanon.

And that? Is one of the many reasons why I gave up on reading TNG novels. (The other being that I completely gave up watching TNG movies two films ago, so there wasn't much reason for me to keep reading novels set after them.)

man i started reading peter david star trek novels when i was NINE. meanwhile, even i, who have only read a handful of TNG novels (and the last one was like... ten years ago), knew that this event had occured! how does that happen? plus i hate voyager and janeway, so... i am emotionless. no, actually i am vaguely amused, BUT STILL. obvs the only star trek novels that are canon are the ones by diane duane. and vonda mcintyre, those are usually quite good as well. actually peter daivd's are usually quite good too, except if e's allowed to create an OC with violet-coloured eyes.

Yeah, I've found that the ST books in the familial collection I read the most are the ones by the female authors (Duane, McIntyre, A.C. Crispin...)

Peter David has my utter loathing. LOATHING.

That said, I think the new Voyager relaunch author is going to try to make it better:

"When the U.S.S. Voyager is dispatched on an urgent mission to the planet Kerovi, Captain Chakotay and his first officer, Commander Thomas Paris, must choose between following orders and saving the lives of two of those dearest to them. B'Elanna Torres and her daughter, Miral, are both missing in the wake of a brutal attack on the Klingon world of Boreth. With the aid of their former captain, Admiral Kathryn Janeway -- as well as many old friends and new allies -- Voyager's crew must unravel an ancient mystery, placing themselves between two warrior sects battling for the soul of the Klingon people ...while the life of Mirl hangs in the balance. But these events and their repurcussions are merely the prelude to even darker days to come. As Voyager is drawn into a desperate struggle to prevent the annihilation of the Federation, lives are shattered, and the bonds that were forged in the Delta Quadrant are challenged in ways that none could have imagined. For though destiny has dealt them crushing blows, Voyager's crew must rise to face their future ...and begin a perilous journey in which the wheel of fate comes full circle."

Unfortunately, I think she's going to treat the first couple of relaunch novels as canon, and, my god did they suck.
