"The Crystal of Cantus", or, The One Where Brax Is Actually Quite Evil, Thanks For Asking. It was this story that got me (selectively) listening to the Benny audios, or at least, it was
elyssadc's reaction. Over the course of one story and a whole lot of flashbacks, Brax:
- engineers a trap for Jason
- kills a passing pawn
- commands an army of Cybermen
- kills Ronan
- does a nice riff on Pandora's "past, present and future" thing
- messes with some more memories
So his goal is to ensure the survival of the Braxiatel Collection, and his homeworld. Bless his black little hearts, but I am inclined to believe that Pandora is pulling at least some of the strings here. Look at Ronan's dying words: "The thing in your head ... it's still there".
If I might be permitted to fanwank -- as if anyone could stop me -- I shall suggest that it was the Fifth Axis torture that reawakened the pieces of Pandora lying dormant in Braxiatel's head. He cites the occupation as the event that triggered this survival instinct, and while he was shady before, he had never been outright evil. Even his younger self, contemporary with the Gallifrey series, is a bit freaked out by current!Brax.
I have therefore decided that, since the Occupation, Braxiatel has had a head!Pandora. Like Baltar's head!Six, only looking more like Mary Tamm, and hopefully less given to wearing red lycra.

Braxiatel can believe it's not butter.

I love this theory so much it's absurd. I think you might be completely and utterly right. The Fifth Axis occupation really fucked him up big time. And it comes back SO often with respect to Bev and Adrian and Doggles and the kind of things they are willing to do later on. Your theory excites me.
I have therefore decided that, since the Occupation, Braxiatel has had a head!Pandora.
Totally. It makes perfect sense. And I agree about the red lycra. Something tells me that Brax would be more into elaborate costuming. A head!Pandora dressed in a fetishized version of ceremonial robes seems VERY him.

Date: 2008-07-27 11:41 pm (UTC)The scene? Where the student comes to ask him about Cantus, and he's like, "Now, close the blinds. What do you see?" OMG I HAD TO LISTEN TO IT TWICE BECAUSE THE FIRST TIME I WAS FLAILING TOO HARD, ALSO ASSMEBLING IKEA FURNITURE BUT STILL.

Time Lords are always better when they're decidedly fucked up. I''m just sorry the torture took place in a book I can't get ahold of

I bet she switches between Romana-incarnations just to mess with his head.
