Possibly the greatest book I have ever bought, but then, I would say that.  (If you missed my post the other day, it was illustrated by Lalla Ward -- she did a lot of illustration work for popular pet books in the late '70s and early '80s, and nowadays illustrates Richard Dawkins' books.)  Naturally, I scanned some choice pics; she said in an interview that most of the cats were modelled on her own pet, and I think a few self-portraits snuck in as well.

I was going to accompany these scans with choice quotes from the book, but I loaned it to [livejournal.com profile] peace_bloom.  Believe me, her cats need it more than most.

I'm intrigued by the book/newspaper she's reading in 2....

It's an ephemeris, a table that gives the locations and movements of various astronomical objects.

It's mostly fur. They're the size of a terrier when they're wet.

Those are charming illustrations, but there's no way I'm buying a joke book to read to my cats. They already think I'm nuts enough as it is.

I have actually checked out this book (http://www.amazon.com/Three-Stories-You-Read-Your/dp/0395957524/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223823109&sr=8-1) and read it to my cats. It seemed a pity to waste it.

They weren't very impressed.

The first cat's almost the size of a pony! And all the others look alarmed or disgruntled. If I had a cat, I'd buy that book just for laughs.

Man, that cat does not like any of those jokes.

I admit, I'm curious about the supposed benefits of reading an upside-down "Ephemeris Table" to your giant-size kitty.

Luckily for me all relationship issues with ones dog can be solved with the magic of cheese. Or a chewtoy.

Or in extreme cases- cheese on a chew toy.

That first illustration makes me think of the unmade serial with the giant cat people of Gallifrey. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unmade_Doctor_Who_serials_and_films#Killers_of_the_Dark) The one we almost got instead of Invasion of Time.

(Leela would have fought a cat person y/y?)

Yeah, that second one definitely looks like her.

Dawkins has illustrations in some of his books? What are they of, animals? Helices?
