I finished reading Barrayar this evening, and was in tears by the end.  All these re-readings, and I don't think I appreciated until now how much Cordelia sacrificed her own principles for Miles's survival.

I have decided -- and [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo agrees with me, and so will [livejournal.com profile] elyssadc in a moment -- that Big Finish needs to adapt Shards of Honor and probably Barrayar.  The whole Vorkosigan series, really, but it's best to start at the beginning.  I'm going to send them a letter, as soon as I can find a crayon large and purple enough.  It will read:

Dear Big Finish,

You should adapt the Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold as full-cast radio plays because they're awesome.  Also because, for a sci-fi action series, they're incredibly dialogue-based.  Lisa Bowerman can play Cordelia; there's no one better.  If you can't afford Edward James Olmos for Aral, I guess David Warner could do it, but seriously, think about EJO.  If you cast Miles Richardson as Vordarian, I'd have to come to the UK and kiss Nick Briggs on the face.

That's entirely credible and not scary at all, right?  RIGHT?

Er, this will sound horrible but um, thank god, I was beginning to worry that my vague urge to cry throughout bits of 'Brothers in Arms' and 'Mirror Dance' was insane. It's rooted in rather similar issues, I feel. *hugs and offers tissues*

Or alternatively, I am insane but I'm finding Cordelia on Barrayar thirty years later hard to take. Not in the sense of not buying it, in the sense of it being a bit...depressing.

If you can't afford Edward James Olmos for Aral

!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!

I SECOND ALL OF THIS, I WILL FIND A LARGE PINK CRAYON TO TELL BIG FINISH SO.

!!!!!!!!

DEFINITELY NOT SCARY AT ALL.

Mirror Dance is the book that I can't reread that often, because it just is too depressing for me. The stuff with Mark near the end, the trip back to Barrayer earlier, the sense that you get that Cordelia's weary of being so strong...

Memory, now. That's the book that does make me cry, but ultimately leaves me feeling renewed. It sounds like you haven't gotten that far yet, though...

Oh, good. Well, not that it's depressing for you but that I'm not having an odd reaction to it. I'm currently steeped in 'the sense you get that Cordelia's weary of being so strong'.

No, still just over halfway through Mirror Dance at the mo.

OMG. Yes, please!

Can Lisa Bowerman do a passable American accent? The Betan accent is described as "flat", which always made me think it sounded American.

It's supposed to be flat and nasal, which makes me think of a sort of Australian-US blend. BF has a terrible track record with accents, and if we went by the letter of the books, all the Barrayarans would be aping dodgy Russian/French/Greek accents. (Er, what's the fourth language group on Barrayar? *draws a blank*)

...I don't remember the fourth.

Also, on reflection, I totally wouldn't care about accents. I trust 'em enough to do good adaptations of the story, and am a bit flaily about the idea right now. Eee.

WE ARE MADE OF FAIL!

The fourth language is English, or galactic-standard, or whatever the hell is the lingua franca of the galactics.

Oh, lord, I'm unreasonably in love with this idea. I adore the Vorkosigan saga. I donated a bunch of copies to the library for which I worked back around 1994, out of generosity, then realized that I really needed to buy more copies for myself and keep them, because it's just that good. If I weren't reading so many other books, I'd give that series a reread...

So, I subscribe to your newsletter -- Lisa Bowerman as Cordelia, EJO (or David Warner) as Aral. How perfect would that be?!

I've not read the books, but I know you're not alone. On the BF forums there's an entire thread about what people think Big Finish should do next. *Does a bit of searching* What Series Should BF Try Next would be the place to suggest this. I know there are a couple of other suggestions in the thread.

Maybe they've already answered one way or another?

Edward James Olmos for Aral

Oh, what a lovely image. I will sign your letter in the same purple crayon.

I've not read those books myself, but I have a good friend who considers them required reading to date her. It's a bit cute actually -- right now all three of her boyfriends are reading through them. :)
