It's not really about WWI, more like a lavish and cracktastic soap set in that era. Some people unaccountably treat it like a serious drama.

Personally, I think that any remaining chances of me treating it as a serious drama, Dame Maggie Smith or not, disappeared permanently around episode 3.

Including the writer. I'd have a great deal more respect for him if he admitted he wasn't writing history, but an Edwardian soap.
