So, yes, I finished a fair bit of fic recently. This isn't the full swag, but these are the ones I'm least likely to cringe over in the future.
(...you know there's nothing worse than reading back over old fics you thought were incredibly clever and brilliant, and realising that you're just an overrated fandom hack with an inflated ego? That's how I feel, 90% of the time.)
Meanwhile, is there any use to which Beatles lyrics cannot be put? And don't give me that look; a couple of years back, it would have been Tori songs. However, I've had "Happiness is a Warm Gun" in my head for weeks, and now I can share the pain with everyone else.

Frog Prince
Summary: Snape and Lily have a reluctant conversation in their sixth year potions class.
Rated: PG-13
Warnings: Gratuitous tentacles.
Fandom: Harry Potter
Spoilers: Half-Blood Prince
Notes: I started this, oh, a day after I finished HBP. Took me a while to find an ending. It is entirely unambitious and uneventful, but I like it.
She’s not a girl who misses much.
Comfort and Joy
Summary: In which Russell greets her aunt's Christmas celebrations with something less than enthusiasm.
Rated: PG-13
Warnings: Minor canon-stretching. Also: Lame.
Fandom: Mary Russell
Spoilers: BEEK, allusions to MREG.
Notes: This is what happens when you leave yourself open to blackmail; that is, you expose
cesario to a truly awful, brain-destroying icon, and she demands fic as compensation. What kind of fic? Oh, hurt/comfort Christmas schmoop will do nicely. *stares*
(So, yes, Christmas fic. I was going to let it sit until December, but I spent Monday and Tuesday putting mince pies and tree-shaped shortbreads on the shelves at work, and now I'm so damn full of festive spirit that I might explode.)
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes, and she’s gone.
What River Knows
Summary: River knows a great many things. Here is a random sampling of twenty-one.
Rated: PG-13
Warnings: Mathematical and sexual references.
Fandom: Firefly
Spoilers: Whole series, plus Serenity, plus speculation. That is to say: Big. Damn. Spoilers.
Notes: Inspired by the 20 Random Facts meme on LiveJournal, although with structural liberties taken.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
The Art of Self-Preservation
Summary: The games people play to pretend to be normal. House and Cameron are two sides of a coin.
Rated: PG-13
Warnings: Um … Cameron.
Fandom: House MD
Spoilers: Allusions to "Love Hurts", "Three Stories", "Acceptance".
Notes: Real, actual, honest-to-God House fic. *eyedart* Um, also written before I saw "Humpty Dumpty", so the vague thematic similarities are entirely coincidental.
...feedback is delicious and very welcome. *curtsies*

Date: 2005-10-06 10:53 am (UTC)Oh - hello? Awesome! Damn woman, you "House" better than anyone. How cool was this story? Even if it did have Cameron in it (I'm blocking that part - nothappeningnothappeningnothappening...).
I like:
"I don't care if he's house-trained, vaccinated and trained to walk on his hind legs. You can't keep him."
and
That Greg House. He's just so gosh-darn nice.
and
He makes his own fun.
Because that ending's *loaded* - Yeah baby.
And I like that Chase says "arseholes" - heh. Thank you.
Wow. Writing in a fandom I read... how weird... (I will also read the Firefly when I've seen the movie... I am the only person on LJ who hasn't seen this movie yet, right?)

Date: 2005-10-07 01:56 am (UTC)I'm very pleased you like it. 'Cos ... this is you, and as you say, it's been a while since we were in the same fandom. And someone noticed Chase's Australianism! *dances*

Date: 2005-10-06 11:59 am (UTC)Seriously, you have Russell's narrative voice absolutely nailed, you write House like he's really House, which is a rare and beautiful thing, and the Snape/Lily is dead brilliant. If I knew more about Firefly I would be better able to judge the quality of that fic, but it looks awfully good to me.

(Writing House is v. difficult, not because it doesn't come easily, but then I spend the rest of the day with him in my head. He's not an easy man to live with. Shock horror.)

I only had time to read one, and it was the Firefly one, as my brain's irrevocably stuck in it since I'm doing a research paper on it for English. (And if it weren't for the fic I'm writing and really want to get off the ground/finish, I'd be seriously falling out of the HP fandom.)
It was fucking fantastic. The tone, the little addendums, it was just so... River. The way she interspersed the random little nothings in with the important stuff. And River/Mal! EEEEEE. Special Hell! And now I want to know about Blue Sun even more and more and more ahhhhhhhh. (This has been a coherent review by Sara.)
I lied. I had to click the House link. I just did. "or an abject lesson shrouded in callous sarcasm" should be object lesson. Just for the record. But it's amazing to watch your language shift from perfect River to perfect House. And the analasys, yeah. It's kind of perfect. 'Cause I've done that, see. Talked about the ways that different suicide tactics would fail. To me, it was purely academic, to them... well, they dragged me to the hospital (only to be looked at funny by a crisis worker since there was actually nothing wrong with me and told to go home, so don't worry, nothing happened). So I really liked this fic.
And now I really, *really* have to go. Meep, you ate up more time than I had to spare. Damn you for being a good writer.

That's handy to know.
I'm sorry I ate up all your time, but I'm glad you liked the fics. (And thank you for the nitpick re: abject/object; I always make that mistake.)

I'm glad you said that, because I've never been suicidal, or even thought about it overmuch except in the mental guise of various fictional characters, and I was afraid it wouldn't ring true. Thank you.

Date: 2005-10-07 03:04 am (UTC)True. But like Russell, I'm never comfortable about writing it -- in fact, I tend to keep most of my Russell fics in a metaphorical box, because posting 'em might Reveal Too Much. (Too much of what, I don't know.)
Perhaps getting shot and kidnapped and beaten up hastened the healing, oddly enough--for it was during (and after) those times that Holmes was there to help her pick up the pieces, to be her stability.
Oh yes, she only deals with her emotions when she's in a crisis. Or in the aftermath. It's one of the reasons I like her as a character; I like it when a female fictional character has to be forced to express her emotions, rather than expressing them all over the place and making me bored.
(Crankiness aside. 'Curmudgeonly' is just Russell's default setting. *grin*
Thank you for your feedback!

Thanks! I can't tell you how much fun I had writing it. I was bitterly disappointed when it looked like I would never be able to post it.

Comfort and Joy: Emo Christmas! The only kind to have. Although I admit to being completely confused as to why Russell's Jewish relatives would be having Christmas celebrations... but I suppose we must blame LRK for that, amongst MANY other things. You take lame premises that would turn into absolutely disgusting much in the hands of almost the entire rest of the fandom, and make them enjoyable, and the writing is so good I don't even feel guilty for enjoying it! (I admit to being curious as to the icon, however...).
What River Knows: *is only person on earth who has still never seen Firefly or Serenity* *is lame*
The Art of Self-Preservation: Yay! I'm too afraid to actually try and find Housefic, so I was very happy to find that you had written an excellent one. *doesn't have to leave virtual house* OK, I have tried a little... but AGH. Thank you for taking away the AGH.

Comfort and Joy: Angsty, but a lovely depiction of the relationship between Russell and Holmes, with a nice description of her family.
What River Knows: Very bittersweet. I loved it.
The Art of Self Preservation: I don't watch House, so I don't think I'm really qualified to comment, but its very good.
And, out of minor interest, whats going on with that WW2 fic you mention on your site?
no subject
Date: 2005-10-22 07:36 am (UTC)And if it's the Russell WW2 fic you're referring to (I don't believe I've mentioned any others, but I don't trust my memory) -- it unexpectedly turned out to be a very late entry in a series that is mostly about Russell and her son, who appears in "Seasons". I decided that the fic would be most effective if read in something closer to chronological order.
However, if you're curious,

SO glad I'm not the only pyscho who thinks Zoe should be pregnant post-Serenity movie. *grin*
I love this piece all the way around. I can just see River sitting somewhere, quietly thinking exactly this way - in list format, with footnotes of sorts for each item in the list. And in such a completely random, scattered order, too.
