Well, I've written this fic, see, and although I do say so myself, I rather think it's the snail's ankles quite readable.  This is the fic I mentioned in a locked post a couple of weeks back, wondering where you draw the line between gen and het and so forth.  It's also the most ambitious HP fic I've written in a while, particulary in terms of structure.  And it's longish, at 20 pages/7,500 words.  Well, long for me; my average is 6 pages tops.

So yes, the snail's ankles quite readable.  Regrettably light in Snapely matters, but otherwise tolerable.

Title: Maps to the Stars' Homes
Summary: Following the war, Harry buys a plane ticket and leaves, but the memories keep following him.
Rated: PG-13, if you care about such things.
Notes: Apparently I can still write HP fic. Who knew?
Warnings: Non-linear narrative structure. "You'll have to excuse me, I was having a flashback." Uses the 'ships established in HBP.  Shamelessly self-indulgent.

Oh, very nice, even if you did kill Remus off. ;p

No, seriously, I liked it a lot - very understated and quietly wistful.

Why thank you!

I didn't want to kill Remus, but I'd planned a scene with Tonks in Grimmauld Place after his death -- alas, the pacing didn't work.

Harry thought she might cry, or possibly fall to her knees in front of the shelves and kiss the spines of every book.

Oh, I sympathise! (Btw - did Melina pass on the thing about "radical militant librarians"?)

He lasted a week before losing patience with the narrow streets and expensive coffee,

Speaking of sympathising!!!

I *love* the whole fic. [livejournal.com profile] melwil said you had a good one coming. She was right.

NO! Share?

*snort* I was pretty young when I lived in Sydney -- although I will recall that I was one of two white children in my class, and everyone else was Vietnamese or Lebanese, and we never thought that was strange or unpleasant -- but I will always remember my mother complaining about the narrow streets.

I *love* the whole fic. [info]melwil said you had a good one coming. She was right.

Oh, thank you! I can see I'm going to have to increase Melina's pay. Much obliged for the feedback.

There's a New York Times article that the Volokh Conspiracy linked to over the weekend, in which the FBI complains about how "radical militant librarians" are thwarting their efforts to implement the Patriot Act and catch terrorists.

And just the idea of radical militant librarians made me fall over laughing, but I also decided that you need iconage containing that phrase. *g*

Icons. T-shirts. Badges.

I suppose it makes up for not being qualified to be a radical militant lesbian.

That was fantastic. :) I loved the way you captured all the characters. You've got a good grasp, at least imo. Spot on.

Mind if I pimp it to my flist?

And NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!! *ahem*

Thanks! I'm really glad you liked it -- and pimp away; I enjoy the attention.

(Sorry about Remus, but someone had to go.)

S'okay about Remus. Everyone has to go sometime, and it's not like you described a horribly gruesom death. ;)

Lovely. Reminds me a bit of McKay's work, with the understated dialogue and pacing.

I'd gush a bit more but since I've fixed eight typos in this comment (now nine) I think I'll go to bed first.

It *is* the snail's ankles! And the bees' knees, too! Great characterizaions of everyone. I particularly liked Mr. Lovegood, for some reason.

Thanks! He was my favourite character to write -- if I could imagine anything from his POV, I'd write a whole fic about him.

Snail's ankles indeed, even if I did continuously mis-read that as 'Snake's ankles'.

Lovely, of course. I fangirl your ability to make fictional characters seem like real people. That and, y'know, your writing is aesthetically pleasing.

Aww you made me like fanon H/G again. (Probably cause your H/G actually bears resembalence to the canon version.) As to the gen/het question? I think you can label it either and am tempted to make you call it gen just so the H/G comes as a sort of good surprise, but cause the ending is clearly H/G, you will get whiners about it, though your disclaimer about all the ships being from HBP might just be the perfect compromise, cause the fic is gen.

Lovely Harry. Very in character and confused, and I can so see him going all over the place and not wanting to settle. The Enquirer bit was too cute, and all the secondary chars were spot on. Also just you made all the locations feel very real with cool lil tidbits, and I can't speak for the others, but you've got mine down pretty cold. I like the non-linear narrative structure, it works really well here and keeps the fic moving smoothly.

HARRY POTTER IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN BRISBANE!!!!!

Great little story! Clever how you have the two threads running in parallel, keeping the reader on his toes and curious throughout.

I *loved* the bit with Harry's "My Family" drawing. My authorial I.Q. is pretty much zero, but one of the few original thoughts I've ever had as to a plot was having one of Harry's friends visiting his old haunt in Privet Drive and finding something scrawled on the side of the cupboard like "MY NAME IS HARRY AND I AM SIX TODAY". This is the second story I've ever come across which scratched that particular itch, I loved it ... and his best mate's reaction.

Hermione's my favourite character, and maybe it's easier to write the bookworm, but I liked how you wrote her here; in particular the scene with Lovegood, picking up the books, was great. Plus his hoping that his daughter wasn't dead was a good line too.

So the Australian version of Hogwarts is in ... Tasmania? That might explain some things ...

Enjoyable read, thank you for the story.
