SJA, Sarah Connor, etc.

HOMG SO TIRED. And I had this weird headache today, that manifested behind my right eye whenever I tried to look at anything. Which was, as you can imagine, quite frequently.
I was so tired last week that I forgot to make thinky words re: Sarah Connor. So, here you go. I facepalmed when I first saw the summary for this, because "Derek and John buddy episode" sounds like the opposite of entertaining. So I was pleasantly surprised; their story was predictable, but the execution was good, and I found myself being quite interested in Derek for once.
On the other hand, the future scenes. No amount of make-up could make those really young, skinny guys look remotely authoritarian, so what we got were a whole lot of scenes where Derek was taking orders from a bunch of kids. That so didn't work for me.
Watching Sarah and Cameron totally fail at childcare was equally fun. Possibly I should be miffed that the women had to stay at home with the kids while the men went off to shoot stuff, but ... well, that basically reverses the status quo thus far. I *heart* you show.
ALSO, I can't remember where I got the link, but there was a cut scene of Catherine and her daughter? I know there's been spec on the daughter's nature, but -- unless that scene was removed due to a last minute change of concept -- I'm thinking she's 100% human. The real Catherine Weaver is dead, and the machine has taken her place. Imagine how fabulously scary that would be for a child, having your mother taken away and replaced with a machine that looks exactly like her? I LOVE IT.
And now, the one with the wee children and middle aged ladies and OMFGCLOWNS. Not as good as the first part, mostly because the execution of the whole "laughing at fear" idea was off. What they really needed was Ridikuluss, but JKR probably wouldn't appreciate more plagiarism.
That aside, it had some good bits, like Sarah Jane's childhood fear of clowns, with bonus flashbacks to small!Sarah. (Who had blue eyes. I'm not certain, but I thought Lis had brown eyes?) Rani and her family are really lovely, and (please don't hurt me, fangirls) I think her dad is more handsome than Maria's.
I had other thoughts, but I'm a bit braindead.
Oh yes, and I'm still watching The Tudors, but I stopped doing picspams because they took a lot of time that could otherwise be devoted to cross stitch. Apparently, Wolsey is offering sexual favours to Katherine's ladies-in-waiting, in order to turn them against her. HE IS THE PIMPIEST PIMP THAT EVER PIMPED, I TELL YOU.
As for cross stitch, several people asked, and I was slack and didn't answer my comments. So: I have framed my squid, although I really should have ironed it first.
suburbannoir found the design here, bless her little red head.
I had a bit of a problem when I'd finished the squid: finding my next pattern. Most commercial patterns are hideously twee, or floral, or both. (I'm not big on florals, no.) And the stuff at Subversive Cross Stitch was not only crude in content (and generally not in a funny way), but far too simple. It's no fun if there's no challenge!
So, I set about trying to make my own patterns, but learning how to do that effectively is going to take a while, and I wanted to do another pattern now. *is five* So it was a stroke of luck when I found these -- two free patterns based on 1930s shop signs. The challenge is that they're all black, which is a wee bit monotonous, plus doing large stretches of one colour requires me to pay attention to counting. I'm about a third of the way through the first pattern now, and it's very satisfying.
In other news, there's no opt-out for compulsory internet filtering in Australia. Bah.

Date: 2008-10-15 08:28 am (UTC)The ISPs hate the idea of filtering as much as we do (my boy works at one and is dreading having to make it "work"). Not that it's at all comforting to know that, but at least it's just the politicians and crazy soccer mums who want it.
As for ideas for cross stitch, I'm very slowly doing this sampler (http://gnatkip.livejournal.com/29500.html), which may be relevant to your interests. Making your own isn't as hard as one might think, as pixels are surprisingly like single crosses and the internet is full of images that can be blown up and stitched. :) But it is a bit of work.

Date: 2008-10-15 09:27 am (UTC)The amount of children in the show is finally starting to hit me, mothers and children are everywhere, as characters. The thing with Derek and John going off to shoot things with Sarah and Cameron staying with the kid at home was weird, but not in the usual 'why' way. Derek had 30 odd kids to look after and wasn't supposed to shoot anything, just hole up with John and the other guy (they could have at least got a few apple boxes for them to stand on in the future scenes) till it was over and watching Cameron being around a child was a bit brain breaky.

Date: 2008-10-15 06:48 pm (UTC)Somehow, having the daughter be human and not a mini-robot is a BILLION BILLION times more horrifying. OH GOD. THAT POOR CHILD.

Date: 2008-10-15 02:00 pm (UTC)Only problem with it is that it makes everything a little too purple- but if you are better at picking yarn colors, you will be fine- just print out the nice color pattern, and asign the yarn of choice to the colors.
